Richard
Do you think your wife will let you keep her? No I don't She doesnt look too impressed in the photo, if thats her in the conservatory. Yes it is her, and No she isn't impressed [Tell herindoors your going to b Amy her own Eglu, maybe that'd cheer her up ] No it wouldn't. We all have our places here. The hens in the run (and their bit of fenced off garden) and me in my office. The end of the garden is for the veg. and it has my shed where I'm allowed to go if I've been good. The front of the garden is for plants. I'm allowed to walk through that bit on the way to clean out the girls or to my shed or to work in the veg garden. But I'm not allowed to hang around as I make it look messy. A peahen unfortunately has no place in the front bit of the garden. Now, if I could persuade Amy to go in the run with the girls, or in my office, or shed (but there's no room there) I might be able to entertain the odd daydream of success, but realistically its not on. I've only got all the hens because I sneaked them in and I had 'extra jobs' for weeks afterwards because of it.

hillfamily
Lovely pictures Richard..............hope you can keep her She looks very much at home They are very very difficult to catch. I was chatting with Lisa at Jimmy's Farm (she looks after all the chooks) and they were rehoming some of the peahens and peacocks. She had the new home on standby as it would be more luck than anything else as to when they managed to catch them
Eyren
Perhaps you could use raisins soaked in sherry, like they used to use for catching pheasants?

Richard
I've been away for a day or two and she's still here. She's getting a lot tamer. Her indoors is away for the weekend on an art course so I've been able to feed the peahen this morning (feeding her has been forbidden so as to encourage her to go home!). She was looking very hungry and eating the seeds from under the bird feeders. Don't anyone tell on me or I'll be in major trouble. Her owner was supposed to come at the end of last week to try to catch her - apparently he said it would be difficult. I'd be surprised if we actually see him again. Do you reckon sweet or dry sherry?

bronze
I suspect if her owner did come if you complained enough he would catch her with a gun and a bit of baler twine. Lay it on swmbos conscience

Richard
Amy has now gone home. Her owner arrived this morning and we caught her, put her in a bag, and she's heading off home - I did however have a chat with him and suggested he clip her wing. I showed her how my girls have one wing clipped - he hadn't heard of doing that (which seemed odd) but has gone off looking for a pair of scissors! So, I'm rather sad because it was lovely to have her - it's an honour when such a beautiful bird stays with you for a while - but the garden will be the better for it. And I know where she lives so can go to visit her and the others when I want to. Thanks very much for all your interest. I'll just have to drink the sherry myself now. Tessa the Duchess
I would be sad too, although she will probably be happier reunited with her friends, and let's face it it will be good for marital harmony Tessa
Martin B
How strange? My auntie has a peacock living in her garden it has come from nowhere and it hasn't left in several weeks. It is eating all her plants and then it is roosting in the orchard! However he has a magnificent display of feathers when he is strutting his stuff so it is worth it. Richard
I couldn't stay away; I've been up to visit her. She must be happier now; there are three peacocks there, one with a magnificent tail. But, there's maybe just a possibility that she enjoyed her few days away from the fellas, doing what she wanted, when she wanted and only looking out for herself? Amy's home; Amy and friends (Amy is the second from the left) Amy's man(n)
Tessa the Duchess
Ooh, Amy's bloke is a handsome devil Why would anybody keep peacocks? I can see the point of having them free ranging around one's manor house, but your man just seems to keep them in pens Tessa

Richard
Ooh, Amy's bloke is a handsome devil Why would anybody keep peacocks? Tessa That's what Andyman just asked me! Why do people keep Peacocks / hens? I asked him. He said they used to have a donkey and it died. They wanted to get something else and someone said they could have the peacocks if they could catch them. So they did. So, they are a replacement for a donkey. You don't get such good rides on a peacock, but the eggs taste OK apparently. And they're a nicer colour.
