Richard
We've got a new friend. She appeared in the garden on Tuesday. We've got our little red legged partridges that always come at this time of year, but were surprised to find a massive peahen that has taken up residence with us. She spends her days peering into the Conservatory, and her nights roosting on the wall. She is gradually eating up all the herbs and has started on the rest of the plants - if she doesn't go home soon we won't have anything green left for the chickens to scratch up. We've found out who owns her - his run blew down in the winds and three of his dozen or so birds escaped; there's a couple somewhere else in the village and we have just the one peahen. hilda-and-evadne
We've got a new friend.... we have just the one peahen. What a magnificent bird. I want one. They make a lot of noise, though (peacocks do, anyway), so perhaps not until (ever) I move to the country. If she lays an egg, perhaps you could incubate it. Joojoo
Absolutely stunning the frosty pic of her on the wall is beautiful. Well done you for taking such cracking pics. I bet you won't want her to go when she does eventually go home - plants or no plants

Ain't Nobody Here
What a lovely set of photos - it'll be a shame if she goes home (Although your garden will heave a sigh of relief .)
Richard
She is gorgeous Has the owner made noises about collecting her? He has, but I get the feeling that he actually isn't that keen. They are, apparently, pretty difficult to catch as they can take off vertically so I'm told. She is also surprisingly bulky - she is a big bird and I reckon will be pretty strong if it comes to a struggle! I'd love to keep her, but it will come down to her indoors in the end. At the moment she is lying in front of the Conservatory window, basking in the sunshine, just like my hens do under their tree. I'm very taken and am wondering if I can disguise her as an Orpington and persuade her indoors that she needs looking after!
The Dogmother
Good luck with persuading the lady wife Richard, the peahen is very pretty, I hope that you can keep her.

I heard they were noisy and prone to flying off, but I want one We go to a pub where there are many peacocks roaming around the picnic tables looking for titbits or avoiding children. Some take food from your hand, others just jump on the tables and eat unattended leftovers.

The Dogmother
It would need to be a regal name, she looks like a princess.
chelsea
Richard should get her a peahen friend and then call them "princess & the peahen" She looks like a duchess to me.

Louise
I guess if I am honest and I saw it on a menu (peacock/hen that is) I would probably try it as I have eaten most things in the past
Richard
At the moment she is lying in front of the Conservatory window, basking in the sunshine, just like my hens do under their tree. Her indoors or the peahen? . Her indoors wouldn't bask in front of the conservatory in the middle of summer, let alone at this time of year. And even then she'd be wearing six jumpers and a fleece or three. And she'd have to be sure "Ooops, word censored!"ody might be watching her. As regards her (the peahen's) name, I originally called her Patricia for no reason at all. But we now call her Amy - because she looks like she is wearing eye makeup 'a la Winehouse'.
