Jillus
After a winter when we have had winds of 75mph my plastic Eglu run cover was looking decidely tatty. In Poundland yesterday I found the ideal solution at only £1. It is a Sunlounger Cover 2000x400x650 and by cutting away one piece at the Eglu end the rest covers the run really well. I have held it on with bungees and at night pull the front end right over the door. I leave the door to the Eglu open at night unless it is freezing. My chickens run free by day but are prone to standing around when it rains looking bewildered, hence the need for a run cover whn I shoo them in. With the snow forecast for this weekend I think it is really going to be a pound well spent!

Ain't Nobody Here
Sounds good - we always like money-saving chicken tips on here! (Then we can justify spending a fortune on some other chicken-related paraphenalia )
moomin
It sounds a brilliant idea. I've been looking for a clear plastic shower curtain for a few weeks now but with no luck. They do them in Ikea but I can't convince the husband to take me there 'cos he hates it with a vengeance. This could be just the job
Strepsy
I got a see-through shower curtain from Asda. It's not plain, it has a kind of swirly frosted pattern on it but the light comes through fine.
koo2cat
I went to John Lewis and if you go to the sewing dept they sell clear plastic sheeting by the metre. I think it is meant to be used as a plastic table cloth as it was with all the other patterned plastic fabrics! It is see through and very strong and I use it on my cube extention. I also use some on our wooden patio table when not in use and it has completely stopped the table from going that silver grey colour! The table still looks as good as new! moomin
Thanks, I haven't tried Asda's yet, and the clear plastic from John Lewis's sounds good too. Looking at the weather today I will certainly need something we've got BAD April showers here, very frustrating as you can't get on with anything outside!! Ain't Nobody Here
For the benefit of newer Omleteers but at the risk of getting teased mercilessly by older Omleteers, may I just mention my corrugated plastic sheeting? (I may have mentioned it once or twice before .) I swear by it as it doesn't rip in gales unlike every other method I tried. £6 a sheet from B&Q. Come on then, let the teasing commence . Jillus
I really like the sound of the corrugated sheeting, my see through plastic sun lounge cover works well but would not last a winter, but the sheeting looks like it will last for ever. Many thanks, off to B&Q after the National I think!
Ain't Nobody Here
You won't regret it, Jillus . I have a run plus converter and bought 2 lengths of 2 1/2 metres. There is a gap at the end but I just used a bit of old plastic shower curtain that had ripped off in a previous gale . If you have a really long car and the means to cut the plastic to fit (don't know if it's possible ), you could get the longer length and it would cover the whole run. Strepsy
That corrugated sheeting looks great, I'll think about that for next winter. Is it easy to pop on and off or do you just leave it on permanently? My shower curtain is on and off like a yoyo at the mo with the changeable weather. I like to let the sun into the run when it's dry. Always cover at night in any case.
Ain't Nobody Here
I've only had it for a few months and have only taken it off once (when the weather turned nice .... then turned nasty again, so it went straight back on ). It's do-able by one person (but tricky if it's very windy ) but very easy with two.
Blackrocksrock
I second the corrugated sheeting by ANH - its great - I put the ends on the eglu by the door handle so that the rain would fall back down and covered the gap at the other end (small door end) with a cheap shower curtain folded up and held on with pegs - with some under the sheeting to keep it down - its great and I plan to leave it on permanently till very good weather. Its tricky with one person but I did it ok too.
KitG
My secretary also makes soft furnishings. Having seen the Omlet shade and read about the problems with them ripping she is going to make me a replacement in sailcloth. Unlikely to be cheap but should be extremely durable. Like the ides of the corrugated plastic tho' so may have a go with that first.
redhotchick
ANH, where do you get the bungee cords to secure the corrugated sheeting down please? and can you remember how much they cost? Thanks.

Ain't Nobody Here
ANH, where do you get the bungee cords to secure the corrugated sheeting down please? and can you remember how much they cost? Thanks. I got mine from * here *. The 18 and 30 inch ones are probably the most useful. The 12 inch ones are a bit short. You can get bungee ropes from B&Q (but I liked these because they blend in nicely with the colour of the eglu run ).

Hi ANH, the bungee cords look great, how many do you need of each size, I see you have 4 on your run? Should I get 2 of each? I thought it would be good to get some for the shower curtain to hold it on (doubt if I will be able to convince the Husband to take me to B&Q for the corrugated plastic - he's getting fed up with my chicken-shopping now ) We have snow here today so I want to be prepared!! cluckbok
Hi ya, Ain't "Ooops, word censored!"ody Here Where did you get your perch that's across your run, that's really cool, we keep using branches but they keep falling down from the side of run. It looks like an airing cupboard shelf?? That's a great idea
moomin
I think ANH should give all of us newbies 'Run Design Courses'!!!
Ain't Nobody Here
You're very kind but I've mostly got inspiration from other people on here (although I think my perch (see below) is an original ). Hi ANH, the bungee cords look great, how many do you need of each size, I see you have 4 on your run? Should I get 2 of each? I bought a couple of each first, then found them really good so ended up getting more of the large ones. I reckon if you got 2 big and 2 medium that would be plenty for the corrugated plastic but if you wanted some for covering the gap too you might as well get 2 more medium ones (they're pretty cheap if you're buying them all at once - I had to pay postage twice ). The small ones are a bit wee - I've only ever used them attached to a medium to make a large . Where did you get your perch that's across your run, that's really cool, we keep using branches but they keep falling down from the side of run. It looks like an airing cupboard shelf??It's a shelf of an Ikea shoe rack that got a bit broken. The ends fit perfectly through the bars of the run and the legs are made from the outer bars broken in half and swung round so they're still attached by the dowling thing. It needed a lot of tiny nails and plastic ties to keep it from collapsing under the weight of my girls . This shows it more clearly (before all the nails and ties were added!):
moomin
Thanks for the info ANH, going to order some today, you're right they are cheap enough
