PurpleHen
I think I get the prize for worst council of the all - Wirral. They collect newspaper every month and agrden waster every month, and that's it No cardboard, plastic, glass..... We do our bit by taking all left over cardboard, glass, cans and paper (not enough once a month) to the recycling centre ourselves, but there is no where local that will recycle plastic. I think it is a disgrace that we can be so far behind everyone else. I have complained as well - wish they would do something about it. So - part of our council area now have "grey" bins. These are for collecting cardboard, cans, glass & plastic. I phoned today to ask when we would be getting one - "don't know, we hope to have the whole of the Wirral covered by March" was the answer. But I suppose it at least shows willing - at last
Guest
At least you'll be able to recycle eventually Jackie Our council takes glass, cans, newspapers and junk mail every 2 weeks. They also take our leaves and grass cuttings The one thing that really annoys me is they don't have anywhere to recycle plastic and cardboard
PurpleHen
We can take everything apart from plastic to the tip - they have facilities there for recycling everything else...
Charlottechicken
In Birmingham we still have black bags collected every week, although I only manage to put one out once a month and then it is only nearly full. We will not be having wheelie bins, thank goodness! We also have green bags for garden waste, currently collected just once a month during the winter, the bags are not tied shut, and the binmen empty them into the lorry and the green bags go for recycling. We have a big strong bag for paper and cardboard, which is collected fortnightly, as is the green plastic box for food tins, glass bottles and jars, and plastic bottles. I usually use a cardboard box for my paper and cardboard so I don't have to have the bag back which has been kicking around the street, in my house I believe that I am in a trial area for the green recycle box. The black bag waste in Birmingham is taken to a large incinerator in the city where it is all burnt to produce fuel, so I was shocked to read in the local paper recently that Birmingham is almost bottom of the league in Britain for recycling! Guest
I don't know how those league tables work We are on the border with South Staffs and their council take almost everything you can think of to recycle, they even have 1 day a month where you can put out old furniture etc and they will come and collect it. They are near the bottom of the league for recycling as well
Charlottechicken
Ah, I wonder if the league tables measure 'take up' rather than facilities offered by the council? If that is the case, no wonder Birmingham is near the bottom, like a lot of people on here, my neighbours could landfill for England! Chickpea
I'm in the area of West Oxfordshire District Council, and I have to say I can't fault them. We have a regular wheelie bin, and four recycling boxes (which you can go and get whatever number you like from the local co-op) for glass, plastics, paper/cardboard and metals. They are emptyed on a weekly basis, and there is a local waste action group for garden waste. Though I think the next step should be for a seperate wheelie bin for recyclables. The Dogmother
We're not far from you Chickpea and we have a small wheelie bin for regular rubbish (only ever a third full), a blue wheelie bin for paper products, plastic and tin, and a brown one for compostable garden watse (no food waste though) The council here are pretty good at recycling and collections. Chicken Licken
we have a green wheelie for organic waste and cardboard(including chicken poo and straw), a green box for paper, glass and tin and a black wheelie for landfill waste. We can also recycle plastic but have to take it to the recycling point - luckily there is one in the village. The bins are emptied alternating weeks. I think it is a bit better than Northants - where we used to live - there we had kerbside boxes for glass (blue box), paper (red box) and plastic and tin (green box), but no green/ organic waste collection. South Cambs are a bit cheeky as they suggest getting plastic recycled via the neighbouring councils collection scheme!! they have big purple recycling bins and seem to accept everything!! Snowy
South Cambs are a bit cheeky as they suggest getting plastic recycled via the neighbouring councils collection scheme!! they have big purple recycling bins and seem to accept everything!! That is cheeky - it reminds me of being in france for the first time this summer (how long ago was that??) They have no collection service so you take your waste to the recycling points, which we dutifully did. On our last morning, the way home was in the opposite direction to our usual drop off point so we used one en route. Unfortunately it was just over the border from Brittany and was in Normandy. We were stopped and my very poor O level french was no match for the poor guy trying to tell me I couldn't leave my rubbish there as it was the wrong county. In the end he gave up trying and let me off!! But I think he told me not to do it again - how embarrassing!
