Could we have a google earth map of members ?

Recommended Posts

On another thread it mentioned the google earth map of omlet chicken sitters.

"Go to Google Maps http://maps.google.co.uk " search for .....

Just wondered if it would be possible for individual users to put in markers of their locations and use some pre-agreed descriptive words, so that people can search for 'Omlet Members' or whatever.

I don't know how it works - can anyone enlighten me ?

As with everything on the internet, a degree of anonymity is a good thing. However, if the map was just listing push pins with a vague location such as your username (and we strongly recommend that members DON'T use christian and surnames together anyway to avoid any risks of identification) alongside their city/town/village or even nearest town if they don't want to specify a small village location. I would be quite happy to have "Kate - Stamford, Lincs" listed as there are a heck of a lot of Kate's in Stamford. Always be wary of posting personal information on the internet but with a bit of care, you can post some things without putting yourselves in any danger. I wouldn't recommend putting my postcode onto a map as that's pretty specific, as would a road name but a vague location would surely be fine.

A few points here so please stick with me.

1.

I created the Google Map as a method of helping people identify potential sitters near to their home location. I don't feel at all "accused" but let me be clear anyway that in no way do I gain from this. I do not (and would not) use this info for any other purpose.

2.

I used only the info provided on the chicken sitters (freely available to wider world through the omlet wiki) as I imagined that people were happy to have this level of identification known.

If your wiki info says "Birmingham" than the "pin" is placed in what Google Maps thinks of as the centre of "Birmingham".

I have no way of getting any information about addresses for any forum member. If the "pin" happens to be on your house it's by pure chance.

3.

Only one person has, so far, asked to be removed from the map and I have, of course, done so (as soon as I was aware of it which was today as I happened upon the request in a post).

I would, of course, remove anybody else who wishes to be removed or, if they prefer, move their location "pin" to somewhere further from their actual location.

A number of people have contacted me since I created the map asking for their location to be altered (mostly to be CLOSER to their house rather than further away but I've warned against that).

4.

I swapped posts with moderators etc before setting up the map and any new people I have added since the original creation of the map have been individually informed that their name/location has been added.

I care very passionately about e-security (and it's part of what I do for a living) and was clear from the outset that no personal info be displayed (hence Barabar's email being used in every case).

I will, with no hard feelings at all, remove any individual from the map or take the map down all together (temporarily OR permanently) if that is what people want.

Let me know.

I'm glad to read this post, as I had no idea I was on the map!

have pm'd you Tony, as my 'pin' is miles away from where I actually live. There are about 100 houses in my postcode so I'm not too worried about anyone identifying mine.

hi Tony

Sorry to have caused such a fuss.

I wasn't worried until others started going on about it

- I thought it would be good to have a similar map for 'all' omleteers (on an OPT IN basis using similar general locations) but everyone was dead against it.

:? Don't worry Hazel, I think it's just become a very confused topic, with one point raised and another one answered, it happens sometimes!

I'm really pleased just to say "Thanks Tonywig for getting it up & running, it's looking great!"

All the mods are happy with it how it is, thank you. :D

I'd like to reiterate Tony's point that it only uses 1st part of postcode, usually a whole town or district, giving a very approximate location. Useful but not too specific. 8)
