Couperman
Well not quite, but earlier I needed to lift the main drain manhole and I came face to face with this lovely looking chap I was about 3' long and had razor sharp teeth Ok it was about 3" long and had very blunt teeth. I decided to call him Gollum. Anyone know what it is? It looks a bit newty to me, I didn't know they lurked in the drains though Kev. jackiepoppies
OH thinks it might be some sort of lizard that someone has given a Viking burial
Guest
he looks a bit like this fella, the common newt http://www.wildinbritain.co.uk/Ponds/NEWTS.htm yours looks a bit on the slim side
Keanie Bean
My mum found a lizard of some description in her conservatory last summer. It turned out to be some kind of tropical species which the nice RSPCA took away. They had no idea how it got here. Yours looks like a handsome little fellow, are you going to leave him there or get someone to take him to a new home? Sarah.x
chickencam
It is obviously the day for taking the lid off something to discover something slightly scary
Mrs Frugal
I'd rather find that little fella than my big fat spider any day (but definitely not in my kettle as he's far too cute to be boiled ).
The Dogmother
Now, we had one of those last year, basking on the back door step one night. I took photos and looked online. Can't remember what on earth it was now, but it was some sort of lizard... had bronze eyes.
Tiggy
I found a nest of baby snakes in my compost once, frightened the life out of me, turns out they were laid by an escaped boa constrictor YIKES, i called the police because I did not know what else to do, the chap just laughed but sent the RSPCA out anyway, bet he laughed no more when he found out what they were. any how they never did find mom I suppose our weather is not all that good for them
Cate in NZ
Ugh, he's a bit of an ugly little fellow isn't he . As long as he's happy in your drain though. He'd be a bit difficult to see if he were to escape........ imagine stepping on him by accident I am so very happy that i've never found a nest of snakes, sounds horrible . I don't like snakes or newts or lizards at all, don't know why, never had much exposure to them and certainly never been hurt by one, but it's something to do with the way they move Completely irrational I know . The Dogmother
Completely irrational I know . So's my fear of spiders Kate, but I love reptiles.
Ziggy
I've held both snakes and tarentulas (spelling??) in my hands, the first because I like them, the second in an attempt (partly successful) to cure myself of a silly phobia, but to find a snake nest in my compost heap, especially boas, would be quite a shock!! Not finding 'mum' would worry me even more!! I like lizards a lot, thought of getting some, but having to feed them live insects put me off... I considered iguanas, as they are so beautiful and vegetarian, but the size of the vivarium they'd need would rival the size of our house!! What a day, spiders, lizards... what else has anyone found lurking around??
little chickadee
Hm - doesn't look like that newt picture. We found a newt in our border the other day and the kids were fascinated. Good luck identifying it.
Yorkshire Pudding
Cool! He looks amphibian-ish to us but could be lizardy - hard to tell from the pics. Is he smooth and slimy or scaly and dry? Whatever he is, he shouldn't be in a manhole cover!
The Dogmother
Definitely not a newt, we get lots of them brought in by the cats. That there's a lizard, I just wish I could remember the name

Goosey Lucy
Looks like a salamander to me. Have a look at this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Rhyacotriton_variegatus.jpg I think Gollum is similar but paler?
Couperman
I still think he is some kind of newt he just looks a bit Gollomy. The manhole in question is upstream of the main toilet drain and kitchen drain from the house so he may have found his way there from the garden drains that I didn't think existed. I hope he doesn't have too many Ninja turtle friends. Kev.
