Mrs Frugal
Hi Claire, I read your post on River Cottage the other day and was so saddened for you. What a dreadful thing to have happened. I hope the police catch the culprits and get your birds back to you. Good luck. Let us know if there are any developments, won't you and I'm sure that members here in your area will keep their eyes and ears open for anything suspicious. claireneal
Thankyou - thats kind! On the advice of the police I'm trying to cover as many online sites as possible. Although I'm beginning to lose hope that they will turn up, but it might help make people aware that we are all at risk.

Ain't Nobody Here
I had already heard about this too . I'm so sorry - what a terrible thing to happen. I really hope you have some luck getting your birds back or at least finding the scum who took them.

This time I will hide them away! Do you know of any hants/surrey breeders? Claire
Christian
Sorry to hear your sad news Claire. Try emailing barbara@omlet.co.uk and see if she can help. She has lists of breeders all over the country.
Couperman
I am gobsmacked that chicken rustling is happening in this day and age I guess it's with the increased popularity of chicken keeping etc. I hope you get your birds back and the culprits wind up in front of the beak. Gamebird
Unfortunately, there are some people who are devoid of thought or feeling and think they have the right to claim whatever they want. Good luck for the future.
Valkyrie
Sorry to hear your awful news. Just when we think we have our properties fox proofed (as best we can) it turns out the 2 legged pests are on the increase. I know it isn't much comfort, but you are not alone. On the Orpington Club website (www.theorpingtonclub.co.uk), there is news that a lot of Orpingtons had been stolen recently: "Over 40 Orpington birds stolen in the midlands, UK: Black Orpington, 11 months cockerel with pullets POL. Splash cockrel , 11 months, with Pullets POL. Two Blue cockerels, 11 months. 5 gold laced cockerels, approx 22 weeks, and 15 pullets, at approx 22 weeks. 1 large splash cockerel 18 months old and 4 gold hens, 2 Lemon cuckoo orps 16 weeks. Also electric fencing. Please contact the club, or Matlock Police (08451233333) if you are offered any LF Orpingtons that may fit this description." Fancy pinching the electric fence too! Bring back the pillories and stocks I say.

Gallina
That's awful news. It's a good idea publicizing the theft like this amongst the people who are most likely to want to buy the birds. Hens would be so easy to steal at night when they are semi-comatose, and this has probably made all of us who have expensive pure breeds think. I don't imagine it would be possible to postcode them on their legs, and rings can be cut off; so is there anything people can do?
Duckmomma
I'm sure I saw a post somewhere that said birds can be micro chipped.
MedusA
How awful for you! I do hope you get your girls back, but if not, that at least the police find the thieves. Good luck with getting new girls too. I am so glad my girls are padlocked in, but I guess that would not deter a determined thief.
safari chick
I have also been told that one of Sainsburys organic or free range farmers had many thousands of birds stolen about the time that Hugh was on tv (jan) - it had to have been planned very well to have space to store them and an outlet to sell them on. Tiggy
I m sorry to hear about your birds, there really are some scum out there, recently an old chap near us lost a whole pigeon loft of racing birds, a blood line he had built up for over 50 years, left him devistated. I hope whoever did this gets what is coming to them in bucket loads
