Egg tally over the first 4 weeks - possible help to others?

Recommended Posts

We wondered if this might be helpful to others starting out with chickens? We've been keeping a record of the egg-laying since the girls started. As we have no previous experience, we don't know if this is a usual pattern (possibly for hybrids) or if our girls have done particularly well. Also, there appears to be a definite difference between breeds re. size and softies/regularity, but it may settle down with time as they're still young (24 weeks old).

It might be helpful to have comments/feedback from others with experience to bring a balance.

What a great idea - wish I'd been organised enough to do something like this. I've only been keeping a tally of numbers over the last week or so as we had a problem with softies. Lo and behold we've had three eggs every day since I started keeping a record....almost as though they know I'm keeping tabs on them

lol i don't even weigh all mine now!

Ebony has laid every day since she started all about 50g

Ruby has laid every day too and hers range from 60-86g couple double yolkers!

Amber has only laid 2 days , average 65g and missed today!

no softies here yet!

So I am not the only one with an eggs Excel spreadsheet! I have a monthly chart printed out by the egg box, for daily weigh & record and then transfer on to spreadsheet monthly.

I am sure the data is very interesting to us - I just think the others in my family feel it is a bit sad 'mum its an egg' springs to mind.

 I could have written this!

You're info looks about right Fur'n'Feathers

The eggs do tend to get gradually bigger. Keeping a spreadsheet helps me to see exactly how they are doing and quickly spot any blips in their laying :D

Guess who else keeps a spreadsheet? I'm feeling really torn as we go on holiday soon and my sister/niece will be looking after girls. Dare I ask them to weigh each egg? They also need to examine them carefully to decide who's is who. We'll just have to have a gap in the chart...

When we were away I got them to tell me how many they had each day and just ticked my sheet - didn't think I could ask them to weigh & identify before they ate them! For my statistics I put them down as the average weight in Excel sheet.

:oops::lol::lol: We've been considering the "dilemma" of when we're away & our neighbours look after them. Now we know that we're not alone :lol::wink:

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Good to know our chooks are doing okay & that we can expect it to continue.

ANH, the prize has to go to your post as it's brought everyone out of the woodwork and also, it's SO compelling that we'll have to convert ours from table to spreadsheet :oops::P

What a "sad" bunch we Omleteers are....................(Awww!...Who cares!):lol::lol::P:wink:

That's just what I did :) .

Me too! Lisa33 wrote a very descriptive list of what colour eggs she got on which days for me when we were away! I allocated them as the average weight on my spreadsheet that ANH very kindly created for me.

You may mock, Egluntine, but from my spreadsheet I can tell that Magpie has only had 1 day off laying since she started 7 weeks ago  , and that Sylvie always lays for 10/11 days then takes 2 days off and subsequently is my laziest girl, maybe because she's the greediest  ! I think if I had kept records last year I would have known earlier that there was something seriously wrong with Marigold, not that the outcome would have been any different. :(

I am not mocking I assure you  .......

TBH I can only identify which hen lays which egg in about 50% of my girls. many of them are so similar....so I'd fall at that fence anyway.

Good luck to you.

Perhaps you ought to start a competition for the most prolific layer.

Oh just think as well as the egg leader board we could have a longest days laying without a day off, highest average weight a month - the statistical analysis is endless :lol:

But when people get bored with our chicken stories we can move on to egg stories in great detail!

:oops::oops::oops:

  • Longest period of laying: 72 days, Maisie
    Highest average weight: 70g, Milly
Heaviest egg: 93g, Milly (which explains the higest average!)
Total eggs laid since Sept 07: 473
Most prolific layer: Milly 131 followed by Maisie 130, Molly 97

OK, it's official, I'm an eggbore  .

It's easy to be an eggbore if you only have three hens who all lay different colours  .

Ah, but much more interesting if you have 11 chooks!

Ahem:

  • Longest period of laying: 69 days, Little Bo (and still going strong!)
    Highest average weight: 75g, Beryl
    Heaviest egg: 110g Florrie
Most prolific layer: Florrie - 294 eggs in a 12 month period

If I'd been asked to do something like this at school I'd have sulked for a week :lol:

I think you all deserve A++ for this. Your maths teachers would have been proud.

I have no idea who lays what here, they are all look the same !

Hey ho. Keep up the good statistics.

My OH would have me sectioned if I did that, he already thinks I'm chicken obsessed.

His favourite phrase at the mo is, ' get off that bloody forum'
