Mel (& Paul)
Hi Buffie Try cider vinegar and honey for arthritis. Sounds mad, I know, but it does work. 1 tsp of each melted in a little hot water, allow to cool and administer twice daily. Our old beardie used to lap it up in her water eveentually and it really helped with her movement. Thanks for that Anna - will definitely try it our our arthritic dog (I might need some as well the way I creak and groan when I get out of bed in the morning!) starboyhull
Hi guys, I know this thread was started a long time ago, but I just called Hellmans to find out what eggs they used (to see if anything had changed) well no it hasnt, the guy on the phone had a script that he read out when I asked him about it. He said that my comments regarding not buying their products would be passed on to the team and that a small free range range would be a very good idea.....He also told me that he was a memeber of a few welfare societies......Not sure if that is reassuring or not....... Either way I will now not be buying their products until they have a free range selection.....I'm also going to do a test today and just buy organic / free range produce (as much as I can) and compare the prices.......Its very hypocritical of me to buy free range / organic eggs and then buy products that dont contain free range eggs......Anyway rant over I will post my findings on the cost difference later once ive been shopping..... Lesley
That would make an interesting new topic! You could also nip into the All Things Nice section and find the recipe for home-made mayo. - it is really easy to make.
starboyhull
I was thinking of making my own but wasnt sure how long it would last etc etc.......Although im sure with a bit of effort I could find out I will add a new thread later today once I get Andy in gear to go shopping.....He's not quite as enthused as me about going organic food shopping...."how much is this gonna cost me" LOL
Lesley
Two weeks or so Karl - I put mine in a clean honey jar and stick a label on the lid with the date I made it.
Cinnamon
..............And its really lovely too. It has a great lemony tang & a nice mild flavour. I would recommend making your own to anyone My family won't eat anything other than my own Mayonnaise now, although I have tweaked the recipe a bit from the one I first tried. Lesley
Not like Jake then? He said "I'm sorry Grandma - but I really, really don't like your mayonnaise - I like sald cream" Thre was a recipe on Mrs.L's forum for Salad Cream - but I don't want to make it as I hate salad cream
starboyhull
I have just been looking at a recipies for it......So I am going to go away now and try it.....Plus its going to be much cheaper than buying it in the shop I am sure...... craftyhunnypie
I'm pretty sure that you can make salad cream from condensed milk as my sister's mother in law makes it. I dread to think of the calories, but my sister says it's beautiful! Anyone else heard of this??? Emma.x
Kathy C
After visiting the BHWT site I e-mailed Hellmans and this was their response: "Dear Kathy, Thank you for your correspondence regarding Hellmann's Mayonnaise. All eggs used by Unilever UK Foods are sourced from within the EU. We have a close relationship with our European suppliers and our consumers can be reassured that their farms comply with all relevant EU regulations, which are acknowledged to be the most stringent in the world. They have recently been strengthened. As part of our buying policy we work closely with producers to make sure the highest standards are strictly followed. It is also important to highlight that there is insufficient farm capacity at this time to sustain support for the Hellmann's business with free-range eggs. In addition our ongoing consumer research into this area shows that consumer interest in a free-range Hellmann's product is currently too small to support a free range option. I hope you are reassured to learn that we will continue to keep both our sourcing policy and consumer preferences under regular scrutiny. Our intention is always to satisfy, where viable, the full range of consumer needs in the market place and this is reflected in the variety of the foods portfolio that Unilever markets in the UK. Kind Regards, Amy Richmond Consumer Advisor" I thought you might be interested.
starboyhull
Hi Kathy, That has made me laugh.....That is the exact "script" that the guy used on the phone when I called........Obviously a company policy to give the same information to everyone...... hillfamily
I wonder what they would say when asked why the mayo they make for MacDonalds is made with free range eggs and yet they still won't change the eggs used in the mayo sold in the supermarkets
One Man Banned
how very interesting This is from MacDonalds website Hellmann’s Extra Light Mayonnaise Water, Modified Maize Starch, Glucose Syrup, Vegetable Oil, Spirit Vinegar, Pasteurised Free Range Egg and Egg Yolk (3.7%), Salt, Stabilisers (E460i Microcrystalline Cellulose, E415 Xanthan Gum, E466 Carboxymethyl Cellulose), Sugar, Flavourings (contains Mustard, Lactose), Colour (E171 Titanium Dioxide), Preservative (E202 Potassium Sorbate), Lemon Juice Concentrate, Antioxidant (E385 Calcium Disodium EDTA), Paprika Extract. Who's going to be first to fire this back at them and question their obvious blanket response........ Devious little b#*^£@s! A xx
Lesley
Clever aren't they? I bet they will just reiterate this part of their crib sheet..... "It is also important to highlight that there is insufficient farm capacity at this time to sustain support for the Hellmann's business with free-range eggs". and use this get out clause..... "In addition our ongoing consumer research into this area shows that consumer interest in a free-range Hellmann's product is currently too small to support a free range option" If it's good enough for MuckD's, then it should be good enough for everyone. If they wanted to step up the supply of free range eggs they could do it - even if it was slowly. Egg producers can't change overnight but they won't change at all unless big food producers start to ask questions
buffie
Thanks for contacting Unilver, it's really helpful Just to say if you want a salad cream, try M&S, this subject (salad dressings) is going to be covered in our July newsletter. This was the investigation I recently finished next one is pet food, a biggy! Cate in NZ
I wrote to Hellmans way back when this thread first started and I'm convinced that I got exactly the same letter I used to like Hellmans, not bought a jar since, either I make my own or buy "Simply Delicious" organic mayonnaise. They now have a light variety . When I bought my first jar of their mayonnaise I didn't like it as much as Hellman's, but out of principle I wouldn't go back. Hellman's could make free range mayo, they choose not to, and I for one am trying my hardest to boycott Unilever products since.

I received the exact same response in the post this morning. It's very annoying that they treat their customers with such lack of interest. Who does their customer research? How many people would choose battery eggs over free range in the general population if they had a choice? I'm guessing that Hellman's tell their customer researchers that it would seriously increase the price of their product to go free range. Surprisingly enough there's very little difference in price between Hellmans and other brands that do use free range and organic eggs. I'm sure that Hellmans is a multi million pound business. I think that profits aside they could afford to support an increase in free range farm capacity. Anyway rant over.....for now.
