chelsea
I have just been stuck in traffic, behind a lorry packed (and I mean packed) full of chickens in crates I was behind one the other day (there are everywhere down here) and it was covering my car in feathers *heart aches* and I did cry I should be used to it really - hubby is a chicken catcher - so he's a bloke who actually puts the chickens into crates. chelsea
Signed. Why should this just apply to the UK, we belong to the EU after all, why can't it be adopted Europe wide? agree!! we have to do everything Europe tells us why cant they do something we suggest for a change!! ..lay a little egg for me
As far as I'm aware "Ooops, word censored!"ody in the Uk has ever starved from eating meat a few less times a week. Exactly! Some people say "I can't afford free range". Then eat less meat! The UK tradition of having meat at every meal is ridiculous. It takes 9 tonnes of feed to produce 1 tonne of beef, we can't go on eating so much meat. It's not sustainable. I agree absolutely. Bet when you ask lots of those who say they can't afford free range find they can afford Nike trainers, flatscreen TVs, Sky+ etc etc. They just don't put a priority on good quality food. I always buy free range meat, but second-hand clothes, no Sky+, no Nintendo DS's etc etc. Of course, before someone objects, I have to say I do know that there are some who cannot afford the free range meat or the other goodies I mentioned. However, I feel these are relatively few compared with those who could afford free range meat if they chose. Eat less meat but better quality! daj198
If my brother, who's a student, can buy free range, everyone should be able to. With regard to eggs, I think a group of us should save up eggs from our girls and hand them out in the supermarkets to those who are going to buy battery eggs. A fresh, free range egg could convert a lot of shoppers!

Abbey Road Girl
Although I do understand and respect the practical objections to the petition, I will sign it out of solidarity with Biccie, Sweetie, Toffee and Truffle. As for the EU, it provides a "democratic" cover for government ministers agreeing things behind closed doors.
Abbey Road Girl
Just in case anyone wonders why my name doesn't appear on the petition, I have been blocked and not for the first time. At least that's what I'd call it when I get the box with the proper heading but then the words "beta test" instead of the petition content. As has happened to me before, using the search facility (RSPCA freedom foods) got me hundreds of possibilities, but not an accurate match. Refining the search (RSPCA) got me 0 results. So to my computer, the petition does not exist.

Tiggy
I've signed it, but I knwo what you mean about cheaper inports, I caused a bit of a riot in Somerfield when I asked for UK free range chicken and was told they only had European inports, OK to its free range but we need to support our own farmers the way the French do
Abbey Road Girl
I'm pasting this from the No. 10 website: Your search for Make RSPCA freedom foods standards in All No.10 found 2448 hits. My search words (Make RSPCA freedom foods standards in all) were taken from the heading. Perhaps someone else would like to experiment. daj198
Hi Abbey Road Girl Sorry to hear you're having problems finding the petition. The URL is http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/chookwelfare/ If that doesn't work, maybe you could PM your name, email and address to someone kind enough to sign it for you. Alternatively, you could use a friends PC.
Valkyrie
I think their web site was up the creek - I had 6 responses to adding my name on in spite of clicking on the confirmation link. I did spot my name on the petition and people after me. I was 50 something but it was on to 67 before it stopped - anyone else had that problem? Perhaps they didn't want anyone to put their names on really and its a Government ploy to meet with French standards - it'll be burning live sheep next. I've come across this more than once for what i would describe as non-establishement petitions. (Are we surprised?) Well, I'm probably known to be a rabble-rouser (though I don't think of people as rabble). For those who witnessed the transport of chickens, I did the same in regard to a load of cattle. The expression of their eyes (just plain old temporary suffering!) are with me more than twenty years later.
