Don't you just want to slap her???!!!

Recommended Posts

 I think this is a very patronising article, yes it's probably meant to be funny but I would guess a lot of Asda shoppers and 'bull-terrier owners' (as she chooses to categorise them) read the Daily Wail. I shouldn't think they will appreciate this description!

I shop at Waitrose and I think their policies (fair trade, free range etc) are great although of course they could do better. They do much more organic and Ecover stuff than other supermarkets. I'd hate to be associated with anyone like this woman, though, and I don't think I'm 'Waitrose Woman'.

In fact, those products she describes are expensive ones - I buy unpackaged fruit and veg, meat etc, and although it is more expensive than Asda or Aldi, it doesn't have to cost as much as she makes out. She's managed to offend people who DO shop at Waitrose, as well as those who shop at the other supermarkets!

By coincidence I did my first shop in Lidl and Farmfoods this week. We're off on our hols for a week and leaving the 2 DSs behind. Well they won't cook for themselves so I wanted some cheap raedy meals for them. I figure ready meals are rubbish so I may as well get them cheap.

I can't say I was keen on either although I did buy organic bananas from Lidl which were 30p cheaper than Tescos. We don't have a waitrose around here and I keep meaning to try Ocado since they started delivering around here but I haven't got around to it even thought they gave me a £15 off voucher.

I found the arrticle quite funny, she probably voiced a lot of things I think but wouldn't say

Ooo my god i hate s"Ooops, word censored!"s!!!

Lol i dont actually like lidl/aldi but only because i can't find what i want.

I'm pretty flexible, hubby likes Asda, i like M&S best but can't afford to buy all food from there, we usually shop mainly at sainsburys or tescos. No way on this earth i could afford Waitrose with 5 adults in the house and the lack of normal things like large pks of shops own toilet roll lol

Thing is I'm a terrible food s"Ooops, word censored!", and wouldn't shop in Aldi or Lidl either, I've been in out of sheer curiosity but I dont want to buy baked beans from Wherethehellistan or Roasted Rat from the hot counter.

Its the idea of going there with the intention of looking down on other people that is so appauling, and the assumptions she makes about everyone else around her. I mean a bloke talking to his Staffie must be a mugger right? I dont find any of this funny at all, she could have written an informed piece about the demographics of the shopping basket but instead offered us a middle class freakshow.

Now where did she put her car keys?

I'm a bit of a food s"Ooops, word censored!" too (in fact when ES did his Food Tech the teacher accused him of cheating in his food diary - didn't believe a teenager didn't eat rubbish and drink Cola) but Lidl do fantastic feta stuffed olives in olive oil, cold pressed organic sunflower oil and chorizo at a great price. They also do free range chicken and basic organic veg. Can't vouch for the processed food because we don't eat it.

We had bellinis for a party last week with Lidl prosecco and peach nectar - lovely. The lady behind me at the till was saying how much she'd enjoyed prosecco in Italy (Oh and she was about size 10 with a basket full of veg and cheeses, she may have had a staffie outside though  ). Wouldn't be able to do the full week's shop there simply because they don't stock everything so it's still Sainsbury's or Ocado for the bulk of the shopping.

I think it was the Asda bit of this that really got me -so rude! I don't shop at Asda because I don't like their food but really! :notalk:

Our nearest Waitrose is about 18 miles away and it has never had the 'wow factor'. Their fruit and veg never looks as fresh as it could.Their fresh fish counter also seems to consist of very little other than salmon :? . Interestingly (and I promise I am not being a s"Ooops, word censored!", it is simply an informed observation) it is sited in one of the poorer towns of the area. Thanet as a whole has one of the highest unemployment rates, low wages, etc etc

The Waitrose in Hythe however is lovely and when we were camping in the area shopping there was our treat :D

We shop at Sainsbury for several reasons - it is closest, it is not the size of an aircraft hanger (so I don't suffer a panic attack  ) and the produce is generally very fresh, although it has had its moments :( but these seem to have improved greatly. When possible I use the butcher for fresh meat although now we plan on using the farm we went to the other weekend. Unfortunately even though the butcher where I work is fab, very little of his produce is organic.

The problem with the article though is not her description of the shops - each to their own - but the way she talks about the people who shop in them. Now that is just plain rude :shameonu:

That was my problem i dont care where anyone else chooses to shop, there are shops i choose not to shop in but to define people by where they shop as a generality :roll::roll: so not funny.

lol i had the same reaction from my daughters teacher at 15, she didn't believe that she didnt snack on rubbish and fizzy drinks!

 This is funny in so many ways.

Its funny if its meant to be true, because I feel sorry for her and its funny if it is supposed to be tongue in cheek bacause there are actually people like that.

I do think its a bit offensive in places though, when it gets personal about people.

Perhaps she should try TESCO!

I love that Waitrose too! We use it when we go to our caravan

Apparently sometimes you can see Paul O'Grady doing his shopping there (although apparently he's not always the happiest of bunnies).

Ooh - do you go down to the Hythe CC site then? We take our caravan there or Black Horse Farm in Folkestone when we just want a weekend away, but without having to travel miles! They are both lovely sites, Not that we have been able to go away in the last 2 years ..... but now just 10 sleeps until my holiday at the Cheddar CC site :D (sorry very OT!)

Why is everyone taking this so personally?

I shop in Waitrose sometimes because it's lovely, the aisles are wide, there's never any queues, the staff are helpful and the food is quality, but it's expensive. I also shop at Netto, everything is all jumbled up and it takes ages to find out they haven't got what you wanted in stock. I think she's pretty much spot on actually.

Don't take it all so seriously!!

I admit that I buy from Ocado, because it suits my ethics. I buy as much as I can from local farmers and farmers' markets though to keep the cost down.

I also refuse to buy rubbish from foreign parts

ditto, although I had to get some onions last minute today and they were from new zealand :?

Thank god there aren't Waitrose supermarkets up North lol (or not that ive seen anyways)

x

There are Phonix! There's one not too far from me. I've never been in, it's probably a good job, I'd get sucked in by all the "walnuts for pickling" etc! and end up spending a fortune!

I'll stick to Netto/Somerfield/Asda and my local shops.

I shop where I want to shop, and as most supermarkets are not yet illegal, or banned to me because of my lack of breeding, I really don't give a fig what other people think of me whilst I am shopping. I'd like to see her pigeonhole me into one of her categories though

I also thought the article was quite funny, and obviously a good piece of journalism as everyone's talking about it :D

I'm a bit miffed though as we don't have a Netto anywhere near :?

just cos we're talking about it doesn't mean that we take it personally or that it's any good as a piece of journalism, in my opinion.

Plenty of people talked about that starving dog in the art gallery but it didn't mean it was good art.

I'm not taking any of it personally, I'm just commenting on her rude, s"Ooops, word censored!"bish behaviour. If I took it personally I'd send her a "how dare you?" e-mail!

I dont take her seriously at all I just think this is poor quality sneery journalism of the laziest type, how dare she make such appauling generalisations about other human beings- who died and made her our social beacon? Any woman who writes for a page called 'Femail' will never be taken seriously by me!
