Louise
At the weekend I went to B&Q to get new line for my strimmer It is a Black and Decker and I bought it about 2 years ago at the same shop When I bought it I wanted some extra spools of line but it was so new a model the number wasn't on the replacement spools packaging yet but that was no problem as we just opened the box and compared the line and I got what I needed I went in at the weekend to get replacement for the other Heavy Duty Line which has only just worn out to be told oh no sorry that is a discontinued model and we don't have the spares anymore Then the cheeky little so and so said but we could sell you a new one Given that my garden is like a jungle and the HDL had only just worn out why on earth would I want a new strimmer I googled it at the weekend and I have found somewhere in blummin Yeovil that stocks it Not that I have an issue with Yeovil just the distance and the attitude that you just chuck a perfectly good piece of kit and buy another one  And why the heck is a model that is only 2 years old considered discontinued in terms of the spares offered Rant over
The Dogmother
It annoys me too Louise - we get that at work with the printers - they work perfectly, but we can't get any cartridges for them any more. When one breaks down, it costs more to mend than replace it, the replacement model is always carefully desinged to use a different cartridge, so when we buy the new one, we are left with old cartridges that we can't use. Egluntyne
Built in obsolescence. It is dearer to replace parts and repair so many items these days than it is to bin them and buy a new one. I have just had a quote to repair a shower which was £50 dearer than it would be to replace it. Infuriating.
Cinnamon
Ebay is a great source of outdated spares - you could try on there. It is frustrating, isn't it? I know B&D are especially bad for this,as I used to have a part time job in an Iron mongers & we were forever getting hacked off customers complaining at us about it
ubereglu
Hiya Louise, Which shop is it? I live in Yeovil...jumps up and down! I have to agree it is very annoying. The worst thing we've had that's done a similar thing was a newish kenwood mixer. When it broke Dad ordered the new cogs and bits it needed and fixed it and it worked again. After about three uses the cogs went again-we were not impressed and so went out and bought a new mixer-Breville this time and it's still working currently! surferdog
Just had the same with our three year old gas barbeque. Burners have rusted through and they don't make spare parts OH has just removed all the 'gassy' bits and converted to a normal charcoal BBQ so should be good for another couple of years. The Dogmother
I hate waste - always mending stuff and wombling out of skips. My grandpa used to mend their shoes - I loved watching him do it.
Olly
I do love the term 'wombling'. It makes it sound gentle and dignified, rather than 'skip raiding' or 'scavenging'. I've had the same problem with a Blackand-Decker strimmer. I Freecycled it (with a clear explanation of the problem) and the guy who took it seemed to think he could buy a sort of generic strimmer string for it. Lesley
Do you have a garden machinery place where you could ask Louise> - mind you, they'll probably try to sell you a Stihl instead!
The Dogmother
There's a place in Banbury Lousie - if you email me the details of your strimmer, I will try to find out of they do the string.
UkButton
... hmmm our local B&Q do sell strimmer line I just rewind it onto the old spool.
The Dogmother
I can't say that I've ever looked dana s I don't have a strimmer, good idea though. I do know that they stock generic chainsaw chains though On that note, my old lawnmower (14 years old) was on the way out - I have been servicing it and replacing or sharpening the blade, but the motor was knackered. My folks had an almost new Flymo in the house up at Norfolk (which is on the market) so they gave that to me (the mower, not the house). I have to say that it's total rubbish and now I am wishing that I hadn't freecycled my old one..... It's only a small mower, and has plastic blades (very strange), which keep pinging out. It is actually harder to use than my older and heavier wheeled mower
Louise
Normal line is no problem it is the heavy duty line that I am struggling to get hopefully the place in Yeovil will deliver the goods so to speak this week The weeds in part of my garden laugh at standard strimmer line hence the reason I bought this one
