Tessa the Duchess
I heard on the news that garages in the South West are selling diesel for £1.99 litre So we have at last reached the point where petrol is £10 a gallon. Time to get a horse and cart methinks. Tessa
Reikiranf
Horses need shoes, granted not Jimmy Choos but still costly so might be better to cycle I think it's sickening though, the way companies profiteer from people by holding us to ransom for things that they know we need
chelsea
yes there is a garage in exeter selling fuel for almost £2 a litre A lot of my workmates have had trouble getting fuel in exeter over the weekend and today, a lot of the garages are closed. luckily I dont live in exeter but I work there. Im not surprised this part of the country yet again is one of the dearest , we have such poor public transport here and its so expensive when you do have to use it, it really makes me I cant wait to move. Stevie
One particular garage has put diesel upto £1.37 per litre-a 7p increase in 4 days. Its greed nothing else. Im giving biodiesel some serious consideration and at £1.12 per litre its a lot cheaper than regular. http://www.cambridgebiodiesel.co.uk/index.php?id=

Lesley
Christian - you've got some of the colours wrong! there's a patch of darker logs in the L/H corner Apparently, the garage owner says it's to stop panic buying!

my fat hen
I keep eyeing our horse up instead of getting the car out - only I think our regular 150 mile round trip might be a bit much She doesn't wear shoes though and copes fine, so not too expensive to run. My DH collects logs for the multifuel stove -he's built a special trailer to go on the back of his bike, but we are really going to have to tighten our belts the way things are going
Christian
Same Here My fat hen. The cost of heating oil is through the roof. Glad we filled up a few weeks ago. Still, it won't last that long.
Egluntyne
A friend of ours used to have a GP who did home visits (remember those?) on horseback. Maybe it will come back into fashion.
Tiggy
it must be getting bad my OH is a GP & is switching his merc for a prias soon, runs most of the time on battery - will have to re name him Ernie

Only problem is lack of hitching posts in town these days, especially outside the saloon bar...great thing about riding is that if you get drunk the horse will still get you home! Unfortunately, I think my old boy [horse, I mean] would peg out if I started using him for the school run! I need to break him to harness and get a cart! Keanie Bean
We are quite lucky here in London the petrol is still at £115.9 a litre but I doubt that will be for long. I'm thinking of turning the girls bedroom into a donkey house . Do you think we could squeeze two in, we have bunk beds? Sarah.x

chelsea
Apparently, the garage owner says it's to stop panic buying! he was on radio 2 today I believe. One of my best friends was on the telly last night buying diesel @ £1.99 a litre from this garage. Its terrible, loads of the garages down here have no fuel or they are limiting people to £10 purchases. I think there is going to be a problem in a moment. Clur
Handed in my 2.2l turbo-diesel car, and bought a 659cc run-around. Hubbie's doing the same. It's fine for town driving, has a little turbo so feels quick enough to drive, costs 35 quid p.a. road tax, and 28 quid for a full tank of super-unleaded. Miss my flashier motors, but blimey, don't miss the fuel bills. Can't believe the cost of driving - I thought it was bad enough when I first started driving and prices went up to 50p per litre
Yorkshire Pudding
We recently replaced our car - another 2 litre diesel family motor, but automatic (OH's left knee is no longer up to clutching). I wish we'd bought a horse and cart. It would mean leaving home at 4am to get to work and the horse would need to be blinkered along the M62, but still... the day might come when we have to go back to more of this type of transport. Or perhaps the public transport might have to improve a bit so I could get to work in under 2 hours using that, instead of a 25 minute drive! ..lay a little egg for me
A propos of getting a fuel-efficient car, my (very eco-conscious) friend last year bought a Renault Clio which she hoped to get a good mpg from. However, she says that in practice it only does 35 mpg, which is terrible as my 4x4 (diesel RAV4) does over 40 mpg. She was wondering if I knew any good small car (but seats 2 kids the driver and a ton of books and papers that seem to have permanent residence in her car !) that actually does 60mpg or thereabouts. She thinks the poor performance might be due to her having to negotiate several long steep hills on the way to work! Anyone got any recommendations I could pass on? Helen&Lee
She thinks the poor performance might be due to her having to negotiate several long steep hills on the way to work! Anyone got any recommendations I could pass on? Wouldn't be Stockton Bank would it? We do the Tenbury to Wocester road every day and used to have a small engine/economical car. After seeing one to many bad accidents (my OH was caught up on one ) and appauling fools overtaking at ridiculous opportunites we 'upgraded' to a 4x4. We spend the same money in fuel a week as we did with the smaller car simply because we are not forever changing gears. No doubt if it was just city driving the small economical cars win hands down. We'd have also been stranded in the middle of nowhere last year in those floods. So no advice as to what car I'm afraid. Edited to add - the man in the unit opposite says his Diesel Focus do great mpg. Helen

Yes,yes, yes - My Fiat Panda is fantastically efficient, & does for us & we are a family of 4 with 2 teenagers. It is a fab little car - I downgraded from a Merc for this & was not a happy bunny at the time, but I have never looked back Jeremy Clarkson thinks they are great too & said he would get one if his legs were shorter. He must ba massive - Hubby is 6.2, & he fits in fine
