Valkyrie
Children both out last night, no need to get up early, but nope, 6 o'clock and I was awake! Filled up the drinker - twice. The first time I was worried I had put too much Bach's Remedy in it. It's been over an hour already since we got home and I think I know who the boss is - the youngest one, Buff now called Cheyenne (and because DD isn't here, I'm doing the naming). The Splash (Apache) is the eldest and although she took poll position at the door, Cheyenne jostled to look through and then plonked herself firmly in the entrance. The poor Blue (Sioux) didn't get a look in (or out) at all. So as we wait for them to relax and explore, I have put a dish of food and a dish of water inside the cube. Guess who found the food first? Dink went the dish and Apache thought she was missing out and sneaked underneath, Sioux is still behind the door in the dark. OH said now we have battery hens because they are in a small space. But at least they have a choice. Noise-wise, Apache sounds like a little duck! But they aren't very noisy at all. OH was up at the kitchen and he said he sneaked down while I was chatting to them, but he said he couldn't even hear me from the house. Next door mowed their lawn, but although Apache was listening, she didn't make a sound - nor did the others. Cars have gone past and jets overhead, plus an assortment of birds, but nothing seemed to worry them - so far, touch wood and whistle. It's Farnborough Air Show this year, so they will be tested when the Red Arrows buzz the house! We have taken a few piccies, but hoping to get better ones. So I'm off outside again - thank goodness the weather is nice. And the older girls are ENORMOUS - even though they're young, they towered over the other birds in the holding pen. I did think the Pekins were really funny, so tiny yet such little busybodies. The lady said they are the little terriers of the chicken world! Valkyrie
Well the girls are still inside the cube, but eating and drinking - I've had to do a few refills. I don't think they knocked the water - it seemed to be dry underneath. They are having a bit of trouble adjusting to the roosting bars and when they stand and walk around, they keep falling in between the gaps. DD came home and we had an ice cream while bird watching - the girls looked like big cushions with their heads poking out, and they kept nodding off and Sioux's head dropped quite a bit before lifting it up (don't I just know that feeling!). Then they all got up and dived into the food bowl again, giving us a lovely view of their frilly knickers. Pure powder puffs! Looking on the bright side, our grass is quite safe at the moment! Valkyrie
I am trying, honest - been playing with Photobucket - now brain dead (not that I didn't have a head start anyway). Well, I am about to try - I think they are thumbnail size - don't know if it'll work - nope, too small to see anything and I can't seem to resize them - well, I can, but it refuses to save the new size, bah humbug! Anyhoo, until OH comes in with DD (got a little job, now have 2 KP's in da house), update so far. Oh, and my e-mails are not getting through at all, goodness knows what I've done! The girls stayed inside most of the day, and I pottered around in the veggie patch. OH and I topped up the food and drink and suddenly - with a fair amount of squawking, Sioux found her way out with Cheyenne close behind, although she stayed on the ladder. She did get her leg caught, but found her way down too. Both found the feeder with no problem at all, and munched the grass (bye bye grass). Meanwhile whinging Apache bokked and stayed put. Sioux kept talking to her, but no way was she going down that ladder in a way unbecoming of a lady! OH made a ramp and put it in - eventually she came down and had a drink - and munched grass! We left them to it and went out at about 9 - they'd gone to bed! What good girlies - all three looking out the door. No torch tonight then! Valkyrie
Thank heavens DD is a Photobucket expert. She has now loaded it all for me (I really am rubbish with technology, so embarrassing!) This is Apache in poll position - actually the thumbnail version is clearer. Move over! That's better It's nice down here, come on girls Who's calling me a chicken? Actually it seems the thumbnail size is better in this one too. So here is Cheyenne and Sioux And here is Apache, finally. Night night all, I'm knackered! Cooks
oh they are beautifull girls, I love the second one where Cheyenne (I hope I remembered her name correctly) is peeking out to see what's going on, over the top of Apache (again please forgive me if I've got that wrong)
Valkyrie
Thankies everyone. Yes Loopy, you got them right. This morning it was totally different - very dainty and it was Apache out first, closely followed by Sioux. They both very elegantly and carefully stepped on each rung and wrapped their toes around very slowly. With Cheyenne it was about 5 minutes later - she wanted to, but obviously remembered her fight with the last step. She craned her neck out of the door so far, we thought she looked like a snake! OH and I had a good laugh at that. But the lure of food at the bottom was too great and so she did the same down the catwalk. OH spotted a scratching by Apache, but I had been distracted by a baby robin - but Sioux likes chasing flies. She can really move when she wants to - looks a bit like Scarlett O'Hara lifting up her crinoline and making a dash for it!
Ain't Nobody Here
What pretty girls . Love your names for them, I think they must be a first on the forum .
Valkyrie
Sorry Stephanie - the splash is about 19 weeks old, followed by the blue - about 17 weeks old. The "baby" is the buff at 11/12 weeks old. ANH - Yay, nice to be first, but I am a sad cowboy fan. I have lots of books (which came in handy for O'Level History for both OS and DD) on the American West (mainly J T Edsons ) - including Native Americans - there are hundreds of tribes. Do you remember a pop group in the 80's called Yazoo? Yep, another tribe in Mississippi! So I don't think I'll be short of names for future additions to the flock. Kickapoo doesn't sound nice, but would be appropriate! Mayo is another, and Cora and Bella Bella. So there are still some nice ones. Although I think the names will be shortened to Patch, Sue and Ann soon enough!
