craftyhunnypie
Yes, I'm collecting 3 lavender pekin hens tomorrow, about 12 weeks old they are - to go in my pink eglu. Being as my older hens have all chose to sleeping together in the cube now! When I tried to put them in all together last year, they all squabbled - now they all cuddle up in the nest - all 4 of them! So pink eglu all cleaned out ready! Picking them up about 10 in the morning from my sister's friend. Very excited! They are like miniature pekins, very teeny weeny. I saw them about 3 weeks ago. Plus, I stopped turning my vorwerk x cream legbar eggs today - so not long now! Already chose names for the pekins. Chickens@61
i love pekins, especially at that age.. they look so adorable our two behave like two upper class ladies, they look down on the scratching and dustbathing of the others from their perch in total disgust! can't wait to see the pictures
craftyhunnypie
I presume they can manage to get into a Mk 2 eglu & onto the roosting bars easily? Do they need any different care to larger normal sized fowl? Smaller sized grit etc? Emma.x
Christian
Congratulations Emma, looking forward to the pictures
Chickens@61
we don't do anything differently for our pekins, and have not had any problems (touches wood!) but they were older (26 weeks) when we got them.. they have softer feet, and if their feathery legs get all dirty with mud etc. it can make their feet sore so the breeder we got them from advised if that happens they will need to 'have a paddle' to get them clean! craftyhunnypie
I wanted pekins last year - remember? But with all the introduction squabbling of the big girls, I didn't have my eglu free. Now I have 4 sources of accomadation for my chickeny friends - so any misbehaviour & we shufty them about. Karens red eglu is being used as a growing up / breeding pen. Bumble & Boon are in there at the moment - now 11 weeks (on Monday) - they will go in with the others in about 2 - 3 weeks. They have made good friends with hubby's chicken who free range round the eglu run. Lovely little pekins doing roly polys & acrobats...he he Emma.x
Chickens@61
ooo, i am very about your set up, would love some more chickens and more chicken accomodation but OH has said no!!
leopardstar
We got three more pekins three weeks ago, they were 10 weeks old when we picked them up, but they've grown SO quickly. Everyone said you can't introduce them to our other pekin until they're atleast 18 weeks old. We halved our cube run for two weeks so they could get used to each other but couldn't peck each other. Last week I thought I'd try them in together and it's been absolutely fine. I still sleep them seperately just incase. You defintely need to get chick grit for pekins rather than poultry grit as it's too big for them.
craftyhunnypie
Thank you - I'll pop & get some chick grit tomorrow too. Looking forward to making these as tame as can be & watching their comical ways. Emma.x

SAB
I am sure they will manage an eglu fine - I have one lavender pekin who I got at 10 weeks and she only needed help one night to manage the ladder for the cube. Now she is first up it at night and she loves flying out in the morning - infact, she particularly aims to get as far as possible and often manages to hit the door of the run, despite having an extension! craftyhunnypie
They are here! They are so beautiful & very tiny. Don't think they will grow much bigger as they are 12 weeks old. They are not much bigger than 4 - 5 inches tall! I have put the feeders on the lowest bar of the eglu & although they can manage the glug, I might have to put an alternative drinker in for them. They are very entertaining. One has already literally climbed inside the grub with its feet & bum dangling out. We have named them... Donut - the lighter whiter lavender one Cookie - the darker lavender one Muffin - the lighter lavender one Have taken pics, just need to upload them to photobucket, then I'll post them on here for you all to oogle at! Back soon, Emma.x

Janty
Watch out for pmt! My lavender pekin is a moody, loud madame and from what I have heard from other people, lavenders do have a bit of an attitude. My one throws my cochins out of the cube nesting box when she wants to lay. The cochins have been known to lay on the grass rather than mess with Popcorn. Good luck! Mrs Webmuppet
My Lavender Pekin has attitude too...........easy to catch but does have habit of wandering around the conservatory, occasonally getting as far as the kitchen. She is also the ring leader of the veg patch invasions and somehow manages to squeeze through the tiniest of gaps and gets in a right strop when you block the gaps up
Janty
My partridge pekin pinches nuts and fruit off the worktops in the conservatory if given half a chance. She's a devil.

superjules
Ah, they're lovely. Our pekin is fab, everybody's favourite which was why we hatched some more, they really are great personalities. I'm sure you will enjoy them. Why won't they get any bigger Emma? Surely at 12 weeks they've got loads of growing left to do? Are they a particularly small strain?
