Early to rise

Recommended Posts

What do people do this time of year when the chickens get up early? Do they make a lot of noise and what time do you get up?

I've seen gadgets to lift a wooden flap type door but I'm guessing they wouldn't work on a cube door?

I'm going to see a friend of friend's cube tomorrow, very eggciting. I have been buying chicken supplies but we have yet to get started on building our run as hubby has had to work the last 3 weekends. And consequently I haven't ordered my cube yet! So frustrating.

We're on holiday now from school, so I don't let mine out until 8am. Even in term time, they only get out at about 7.30am. They're quiet until the cube door opens and then rush out for the food. They're going to bed at about 10pm, although it's been very light here until about 11pm lately.

Hello Chooklady

Don't leave it too late to order your eglu cube as it takes about 6 weeks to arrive after you've ordered. The extra wait could be even more frustrating. I ordered ours last week and it's being delivered on 8th August - getting very excited now.

I have cube door shut at night and only open about 7/7.30 weekdays and 8.30 at weekends..have even left it till 9 one morning and no problems at all.. I don't hear anything unti they hear me coming.

I am going to leave door open while away for few days so think this will upset the routine and cause a lot of noise very early! :?

I don't let mine out until 8 and I also don't hear anything until I've actually opened up the door. I have left the door open when I've been away and the neighbours haven't complained so I think they must just be very quiet girls. :D

Hope I haven't spoken too soon.

DH was up at 5.30 this morning, as our yellow hairy monster was barking to be let out for a wee, & he let the chooks out then.

I'm not sure if she gets woken up by the chooks, or they are woken up by her, as sometimes the other 2 girls are waiting at the back door, other mornings they are still in their beds, presumably willing her to shut up & go back to sleep as we are! (Daisy still sleeps in a cage in the kitchen, to avoid nasty surprises in the mornings!!)

One of my noisy chickens woke us up at 4.15am last week.

The other days she has managed to last until around 5.30am.

They haven't been doing this long - the early morning noise is about 10 days ago, either the result of my neighbours tree that shaded the run being cut down or the introduction of two new chooks - which has gone smoothly apart from possibly the noise!

I leave the cube door open - it's worse when it's shut.

The problem is, we go rushing down to shut them up - if we carry on they will think all they have to do is shout and we will be there.....Arggh!

My ladies all make a cooing noise & dont stop till I let them out. I now let them out at 6am, it use to be 8am! I no longer need an alarm because as soon i hear hear them, im straight out lol. Cant risk upsetting the neighbours.

Sady I do have to lock them into their run @ 9.15am while I'm at work. Let them out again at 6pm. They let themselves to sleep between 9.30-10pm, then locked the eglu door. x

These usually get let out at 7-7.15 weekdays and 8 at weekends.

This morning was a little different with some kind of comotion going on with squawking and shouting at 6 o' clock so rushed out just incase something was about.

As soon as I did it all quietened down but about ten minutes later it started again. There were 2 magpies in nextdoors trees and could hear a squirrel rustling up and down too.

Since "summer" has come I have been leaving the eglu door open so they can get into the run whenever they want to. I was awake at 4.30 one day last week and looked out and there they were!

Luckily I don't need to be too concerned about noise - there is a cockerel down the road which makes much more noise than mine ever do.

I tried leaving the Cube door open, but my noisy girls walked around "paw-pawking" really loudly at 4.43 one morning and wouldn't shut up, so that was the end of that. I didn't want to be awake at that time and I was sure the neighbours didn't either

The last one's now usually in bed by about 10.00 and I close the door then. All remains quiet until about 5.30, when they start clattering and pawking to be let out. As they are still enclosed, only I hear this (I asked the neighbours), so they are left to complain until about 6.00 when I open the door and they pile out.

No chance of my lot remaining quiet till 8.30
