My cube and chickens arrived today!

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody!

What a busy day! My cube arrived in an Omlet van at around 9.00. it was all up and running by 10.00

I had a bit of a confrontation with the man as he said he had only ever built cubes inside pens, never on the outside, but if I insisted that was what I wanted then he'd do it. he was a bit sceptical! It took some convincing!

Anyway, my chooks are happy, the the gingernut rangers are the nosiest and most confident, they have been put in the pen all day, the Mrs Pepperpot's have yet to venture outside the cube, not even tempted by corn, grapes or pasta.

I have photos and have uploaded them to flickr, but can't work put how to get alink on here. All help gratefully received!

The Gingernuts have settled really well, they are put in the rain pecking at all the grass! One is very nosey, I suspect she will be the head hen. They are lovely and fluffy, bigger than I expected, but I am really pleased with them.

I am going to Thornes tomorrow to pick up two more different ones for a bit of variety.

Egluntine,I think yours is bigger than mine, mine is 9'x9'.

It is a great run, and seems to be keeping the chickens reasonably dry, despite the torrential rain over the last 2 hours.

Thankfully it ewas beautiful this morning, up until 4ish, the rain, rain, rain!

They are still out scratching and the pepperpots still have not come out yet!

ubereglu, I have bought some pink Crocs to wear as well. I hate them, I think they are hideous, but they are so practical for walking down my garden in the pouring rain.

They stay dry, so do your feet.

One of the Pepperpots ha come out and I have her on my lap in the house! She is beautiful and talks incessantly! She may be called marjorie after my MIL as she was very regal like my chook is!

I have just let them out, the two gingernuts came straight out into the run. One of the Mrs pepperpot's looks a bit sad :( huddled up in the cube.

The gingernuts looked very fat, happy and comfortable last night in the nesting box!

Report back later as I am off to Thornes for two different ones!

Hi Purplemania,

My run came from http://www.flytesofancy.co.uk/acatalog/Chicken_Coops_with_Runs.html as there is no way a Management Consultant husband would can not change a light bulb or wire a plug could ever help me build something,( I love him dearly, and he can keep on doing what he is good at as it he paid for all this!) although I did look into buying all the panels etc. I childmind and have 3 x 18 month olds so not a lot of spare time during the day.

The grandfather of one of the children I childmind put it together for me. I told flights of fancy that I was getting a cube and they left the end panel open, made to fit the cube.

I asked on here for advice about fixing it to the pen, and most people said the cube would be heavy enough butted up to the run. Someone showed me a very useful photo of a "collar" they had made to fit onto a run.

It does fit neatly, there is not any gaps, but I have put some very strong bungees around it attached to the pen, but they are probably not needed.

I don't know what I am going to get today, it depends on what they have, but I would like a whwite or grey colour for a bit of variety, and so I can tell them apart when I name them! They are the same age as my Omlet hens, so I will introduce them tonight at roosting time.
