Cinnamon
I realised this by accident I have a tiro of terracotta pots, upturned,in my girls pen, which they like to jump on. I found out today that if yo sprinkle Citronella oil on the terracotta,it sort of soaks in & keeps its smell for ages, keeping flies away for much longer So try popping a small terracotta pot in the run, & adding a bit of Citronella if you are plagued

Steph101
I'll have to try that next Cinnamon. Anything's better than flitraps!
Phosphorus
I have to try this - something else good to put in their run and DH has made me some large compost bins. Trouble is he said that the only place to put them was behind our chicken run - I had to move the flitrap to that end of the run as the flies were gathering. Hopefully that will remove the smell of compost that now seems to be gathering as well!

redfrock
I do the same on the bricks in that are dotted all over Bibble's run (put in her partly dug burrows ) - it does last a long time. I just renew when it rains

chelsea
I do a similar thing, I have an old yellow duster and every other day squirt a couple of drops of citronella & eucalyptus oil onto the duster and its hung from the roof of my run, it wafts around in the wind so there is a nice lingering smell of fresh citronella in the run vicinity no flies either! Now that idea I really like. I have a triple pack of recently purchased dusters - I can see the hens having one of those. Just need to find some eucalyptus and citronella - keep forgetting to buy some

Yolky
try neph aromatics online they have it on offer at the mo 50ml for £3.99 and that includes postage. £80 per litre ? From looking about on the internet that is a good price. I am not talking about watered down oil that you burn I mean the pure essential oil. You only need 3 or 2 drops of it, a 50ml bottle should last about 2 summers.
