Jules.
Going on from the cost of layers pellets thread I thought I'd see if the cost of the hens has gone up over time! It certainly has in my case. I bought Buzz & Poppy from a (then) Omlet recommended farm near Preston for the princley sum of £4 each. For 2 hens & a sack of layers it came to £12 altogether My last 2 hens cost £12 each, & I was informed at the time that they were shortly to go up to £13 each due to the rising costs of feed etc.

madchickenlady
I paid 15 pounds each for my pekin pullets (9 weeks old at the time), and I'm about to pay 10 pounds each for two 6 week old chicks. I'm addicted!
laurmurf
We got ours from Glencroft Poultry Farm in Catterick, North Yorkshire: he does 'White House range' similar to Meadowsweet poultry. The 'list' price was £10 each but the price got cheaper for 6+ hens. We got 6 and he charged us £8 each. An absolute bargain i thought! Lovely healthy birds raised to RSPCA Freedom standards, recommended by Omlet and oft mentioned here.

bokbokbok
I'm so glad to see some high prices creeping in here - I thought I was the only prat to have paid *too much*! I can't remember the individual prices but the pure breeds I got (see signature) varied from £30 to £35 and the two Isa Browns from the same guy were a tenner each. My first trip cost me £140 for six birds I have never admitted that to anyone else - especially my husband! The light sussex cross was a fiver at a poultry fair and by far the prettiest girl - I almost wish I had paid more for HER!
