little chickadee
We've got ours on, but I've got appalling circulation and often wear thermal undies and am still cold! Our heating isn't terribly good but it will have to last for the moment. We used to have the heating on all the time when we lived in Brum with a gas boiler, but since moving to the countryside and having to use oil, we've seriously altered our heating habits. The open fire gets used a lot in the evenings. I've also used my John Lewis vouchers to buy one of these electic blankets http://www.johnlewis.com/4988/Product.aspx It heats up almost instantly and has a timer on it so it doesn't get left on all night. I never saw the point when Hubbie had one before as it took about an hour to make any difference, but this one is truely fabulous. Comes with a 3 yr guarantee too. The great thing is that if I need the look in the middle of the night and come back shivering (we live in a Chalet bungalow and it's freezing upstairs) I can pop the blanket back on for a bit. ..lay a little egg for me
Still managing without the central heating so far. The rayburn is on all the time, though, and we have the woodburner on in the evenings.
Reikiranf
You are all so good, I had the heating on timed but we have one of those houses that once it gets cold it takes days to warm up, probably because we only have one radiator downstairs and that's in the hall, we have gas fires in the lounge and dining room, no heating in the kitchen and an oil filled electric radiator in the conservatory on the frostguard setting. We have recently topped up the loft insulation and have blackout blinds which help to keep the heat in but I wimped out a couple of weeks ago and have the heating on constant but on the lowest setting the thermostat is on 18 degrees. If we feel chilly apart from extra clothing we use wheatbags or a snuggly fur throw.
madchickenlady
My heating has been on more or less around the clock for the last week In my defence, we have no other source of heat whatsoever, and I have two small children
Cinnamon
No need to speak in your defence, Madchickenlady - mine has been on for a good month or so. We have it on 24/7, & each room has its own thermo. That way its cheaper for us,as you don't get the sudden need for a burst of heat to warm a room up, but its on slowly & steadily, maintaining an even temperature. Our living room for example is turned right down, because we have the log burner in there, but Cleos room is bitter, so she has hers a bit warmer. We have a heated towel rail in the bathroom which heats up there really well, as well as under floor heating in that room, which is fantastic
rachel19
We are stil not using heating and probably wont. Its too expensive (we're students) and our house is so draughty that it doesn't make much of a difference anyway. Im currently in bed with about 4 layers, a hot water bottle and gloves! miffy
we put the heating on last weekend when we had visitors. I set it at 18 we were in t shirts and they were running around in a couple of jumpers each, my sister thinks we are mad not keeping the place warmer. Now we have it onat 18 if we dont light the woodburner in the evenings. I was told not to burn wood with paint/varnish, nor MDF/woodchip in the woodburner, so we bought half a load of logs . What wood do you all burn?
Shirl
We mainly burn coal. I too wouldn't burn the woods you mention. We do save any wood chopped down in the garden but obviously they should be stored for 12 months first. We tend to only use wood on the chilly autumn evenings when just a little heat is needed for a short while. With coal the burner is filled in the morning and turned down low. I give it a prod halfway through the day if I'm around and then that does until late into the evening. Our heating is on in the morning for about 2 hours mainly because it has to be on at the same time as the water and with 6 of us in the house we use a lot of hot water. It is also on in the evenings but our thermostat is set to about 18 degrees and the radiators in some rooms are turned off because the rooms aren't used. Olly
Well I'm still not turning the heating on for more than an hour in the morning most days, although I cracked once this week when I got up and it was below 13 degrees. I am always rushing around so much that apart from that moment when I get out of the shower I don't feel it too much. I am going to read the gas meter later and compare with last year to see how much I'm using. I'll be lighting my wood-burner later today as a VERY cold night is forecast! Miffy, you are right about the things you mention as they are likely to give off fumes which could either be dangerous or clog up your flue. I've got a lot of old pallets, which are a pain to cut up and they burn very quickly - but hey, they were free. I've also been given a huge amount of building off-cuts, again it needs sawing up to length but I find that's an ideal job to do while the girls are free-ranging, as it keeps me warm while I keep an eye on them. Worth asking around - 80% of s"Ooops, word censored!" wood in this country goes to landfill apparently, so builders are often glad to get rid of it. I usually just have the thermostat turned low overnight.
