Ms Marple
No heating here yet - I absolutely refuse. However it will be me who turns it on in the end. No one else seems to feel the cold. OH and the boys wander round in T shirts all year round whreas I just put layer upon layer upon............ We have the AGA in the kitchen and are thinking of putting a sofa in the dining area bit and living down there as it seems a waste to put the heating on sometimes during the week when we are all out. Have also been looking at wood burners, but we have to have a Defra- approved one as we are a smokeless zone, so little change from £2000. Still deciding whether we should go for it as it will pay off in the long run. We do have lots of wood as we have cut down some trees to build our garage. Flo
I havn't had the heating on yet but that might have something to do with not having had a boiler since 12th August! My landlord is still thinking about how to replace it so in the meantime no heating! It is fine as I was brought up in a big drafty house, so "put another jumper on" was a bit of a mantra but I am starting to worry about how long it will be until it is replaced! Eek! Jillus
We decided not to use the oil boiler to heat the water about a month ago, because we have a shower that heats the water, cold fill dishwasher and washing machine decided it was cheaper to leave it off. If I need to wash pots by hand they get done with water from the kettle. Once a week or when I feel the need I put the boiler on for three hours to get enough water for a bath. It is quite cool up here but by lighting the coal and wood fire in the lounge about three each day it gets quite cosy in the sitting room anyway. I know we will have to put the heating on eventually but until at least mid October it is going to be extra jumpers and fleeces for us! KimmyCustard
Have just put on a fleece and a pair of ski socks. OH has just lit the wood burner and flung on a log that looks like its come from a Canadian logging camp. Mmmmmmm, TOASTY! Kimmy x

We've not had the heating on yet but I'm really lucky that we have a south facing conservatory to dry the clothes in and put emergency items on the boiler flue to dry quickly! We've been debating a woodburner, but I don't think that we can really justify the investment this year as the room would need replastering and lots of other stuff too when we get it done. It's definately on the wishlist though as we're oil fired too. Mind you, I've found that have a tank of oil makes me much more aware of when we are putting the heating on than when it was just a limitless supply when I lived in a mains gas area. Goosey Lucy
Me It comes on for half an hour before we get up in the morning and I've just put it on again now as the kids and me are cold and wet. It'll not be on for long though.
Snowy
Funnily enough, I was only thinking the other day that my children would never what it is like to have a warm bath and rush downstairs to get dry by the (coal) fire; use a hot water bottle or wake up to Jack Frost patterns on the windows. I think that may now have been a premature thought! I can see us going back to that this winter!
Guest
Mine all know about hot water bottles. How can you deprive your children of such pleasure? I'm always thrilled to bits when it's cold enough to have a HWB - I think it will be tonight!

Seriously though, I have a couple of hot bods - even tonight, they only have their sheets over them, too sweaty for duvets!
The Dogmother
Rosie is the same Snowy. I have low blood pressure so get cold at night, I had a HWB two nights last week, and when it's really cold I get Rosie to sleep in my bed... only thing is that I then get kicked all night
cam1
Hi all well we have not had our heating on yet and are trying not to as we have an old gas boiler that is on its last legs and probably won't go through the check thanks to s sticky gas valve . We are trying to persaude kids to layer clothes (bought myself some vests last week! much to OH amusement. We are considering (when pennies allow) taking out the fake gas "real" fire and having a wood burner with back boiler does anyone have one of these can anyone recoomend them? have few friends with woodburners but no one with back boiler? Thanks cam mya 11-9-08 13-9-
chelsea
no, we wont put the heating on for a while yet. We might try and last out till November. We've just had a new boiler fitted which cost an arm and a leg so we are cutting down on expenses. Wooly jumpers and big furry throws on the sofa will do us. chickencam
No central heating here, we have been lighting the woodburner most evenings for the past couple of weeks though because it has been the only way to get washing dry, by putting it on the airer in the lounge overnight We got another load of free wood offcuts from our builer friend on Sunday, we now have wood stuffed in any available space, sheds, garage, summerhouse, seed house, bags under tarpauline, hopefully that's us sorted for the winter now . We will avaoid the heating as much as possible like we did last winter, we find we see more of the children that way. I used the radiators a few times for drying washing quickly and first thing in the morning. It was pretty parky here first thing and my ankles are still cold
The Dogmother
Wooly jumpers and big furry throws on the sofa will do us. Don't forget to cuddle that big woofle to keep warm I've had the stove going the last few nights (free wood), it's just the mornings that are cold. There's not enough time in the morning to get it going properly... I know.. I need a slave to light the stove every morning before I get up! Tina C
We are planning to have the whole of our heating replaced but the plumber is a friend and we are waiting for him to fix a date. I am trying to avoid putting the heating on until its done. Its OK at the moment but I work at home so if it starts to get cold its going on. Wish I had a stove or a fire... but we can't do anything about that until the heating is done as the boiler is vented into the chimney
The Dogmother
I'm the same Tina - the boiler is being serviced on the 26th.. the heating WIL NOT go on before then! Biscuit kept me nice and warm last night.

Jillus
I have just discovered a great way to keep warm, go to B&Q, buy 22 rolls of loft insulation ( BOGOF), clear half of the loft and lay it! Mind you I don't think I will be able to do anything else today but I am very warm!
Guest
Was blinking FREEZING here tonight - Mum was out all day and I didn't get home wiht James till 6.30 so the fire didn't go on until then. Has only just got to a good temp - with warm cardi and blanket on! BUT NO HEATING!!!
Omletina Kyckling
I haven't put it on here yet. I'm a fleece sweater and fluffy blanket on the sofa kinda girl. This place is too big and draughty to heat just for me, as it'd cost a fortune so I just snuggle down - at bedtime I rely on the kitties to snuggle up to me and insulate!!
