HENthusiastic
I went to my local farm shop this afternoon. They have an area out the back with goats, chickens, guinipigs etc. I went for a look and was totally at what I saw. They have some birds that are clearly young chickens, they look to me like they are about the age I got my birds at, so I guess they are P.O.L........... but they are simply huge. They stand twice the height of my girls and their legs looked as thick as a bird of prey. They were incredible. Anybody know what they are? I'm going to go back soon and get some pictures to post on here. They were quite a dark brown. I asked the guy working there but he couldn't remember their breed. They were truly amazing. Honestly, they must have been double the size of my girls, or not far off. Id love to know what they are. Snowy
Sound lovely! Could've been Brahmas, they seem to have very 'bird of prey' faces and big legs. Or Orpingtons or Cochins. Oooh, would love to see pictures!
Angels4
Could it have been a Jersey Giant?! I understand they grow quite large. Hens generally weigh 9-11 lbs and roosters top out at 13-15 lbs. Check out the breed here. www.cindasbluejerseygiants.com

HENthusiastic
Hi everybody. Thanks so much for your suggestions and pictures. I've looked at the pictures people have posted, and googled pictures of other breeds suggested. None of them look anything like the birds I saw though. One identifying factor I forgot to mention is that their legs were bright yellow, almost orange. Aparently somebody locally has been re-introducing an old local breed of chicken which is said to be very big..... I'm wondering if it may be that? I will try to get photos of them as soon as I can. The guy working there was very friendly and got one out for me to look at properly, so if he's there again, he may let one out again for a picture. Shape wise they were very like my ginger chicken. Just darker and ENORMOUS! (Love your round step affair Chelsea)

HENthusiastic
They are indeed a bit scary looking!!! I was hoping the same guy would be there and get out out again for a photo of them being held, so you could get an idea of the size. Maybe another day. They are certainly big 'uns! GreenGirl
they do look a bit strange, love the gangster looking eyebrows, bet they would give a fox a taste of his own medicine have never seen them in the feather, always fancied guard chickens and some of the game foul look like they would do the trick! mostin
Just wanted to say thanks to Janty for posting that fab photo of her Brahma earlier in this thread. I am a relative newbie and only have standard size girls, I had no idea of the size difference What amazing birds, do they fit in eglus? moomin
I have a massive Cochin who lives in an Eglu (almost as big as a Brahma), she has to stoop to get out the door but doesn't seem to mind! It's the run size that's important, when fully grown they can't really have an Eglu run as they are too tall. My chooks have a walk-in run (afterthought though, when I saw how big she was getting!!). mostin
Hi moomin, thanks for that, I just looked at the pictures of those white cochins earlier in the link to see what you have. What beautiful beasties. My hubby keeps nagging at me to let him build me a walk in run but I like moving my girls around. It's given me pause for thought now if it means eventually I can upgrade to some of those girls
