The one thing that Omleteers have said to me is that they find the forum so friendly and above all safe. In fact, I think it safe enough to let my 10 year old read it and post on here... we have quite a community now of junior users, some of them even younger than mine.

 

Which leads me onto the subject in hand.. not a whinge or gripe, but just a gentle reminder to 'mind your language' when posting on the forum. We have a swear filter, which catches most of them but us mods have noticed lately that some users think it's fun to post naughty words and see if the filter picks them up..... of course, being all-seeing, us mods can actually see the words that the censor has blotted out

I agree that the lack of insults and bad language is really refreshing on here.

 

I only ever swear when I hurt myself or am really cross. I slipped a word pertaining to manure whilst cutting up hot pizza for my ED birthday tea the other night when I burned my already cut finger It did create some hilarity but I was quite embarassed.

I would never swear in public although I do admit to using fruity language at home in moments of frustration but am usually reprimanded by my 15 year old for doing so with a look and a "Muuuuuum!!" if I get carried away. I don't see the need to use expletives on the forum though as they don't improve the telling of a story and certainly aren't necessary.

I work with all men, in a business allied to the construction industry, so you can imagine that I hear some pretty fruity stuff at times. I am well used to turning a deaf ear (I actually DO have a deaf ear ) but they wouldn't consider using that language in front of children.

 

I find the consideration of posters on this forum very refreshing; I browse on another, less polite, forum and the words used there make even my hair curl!

I agree that this is generally a nice, safe forum and it's not often you can get one where all age groups can join together like this....

 

I've had my mum and dad here for the weekend and my mum used a swear word last night, not a big or nasty one, but she never swears so it just sounded so funny! I nearly dropped my wine glass....nearly, but not quite you will be pleased to hear!

I don't swear much either but used to work in the Construction Industry as well so there's not much I haven't heard........I just ask myself if I would be happy for my Grandchildren to read what I'd written..........regardless of what they might already have heard from older children at the playground

I have been known to allow the odd expletive pass from my lips in moments of frustration, and I can hold my had up to having been moderated for typing a naughty word and replacing a couple of letters with symbols.

 

In general it is best to think how would this sound if I was addressing a room full of people of different ages and backgrounds in a professional capacity? How would it seem and what would they think of me? Would I look foolish in attempting to be cool and groovy and would I be insulting and offending them?

 

Most of us do this.

 

We can have a laugh and a bit of fun without being offensive or vulgar.

 

Only rarely have I read things that have offended me or seen links to unsuitable material posted.

 

Thank heavens for our even handed team of mods who zapp this kind of thing with expediency.

hmm - another way around the swear filter is to asterisk out letters - not wanting to point any fingers, Claret....

.....which is also against forum language guidelines Phil. Clare wasn't suggesting that beating the filter was a good idea, quite the opposite. Asterisked swearing will be edited too, so just a pain if people do it.....edit. Sheila.

What I like about this forum is that you can click on the postings and links and know that you won't get a nasty surprise.

I did get sensored recently but I was only referring to female dogs. It isn't my fault some mean people have turned it into a naughty word.

 

I do like the fact that it is quite clean here. I visit another forum every now and then and I really hate the language it just makes the people seem crude and it isn't as if I don't slip up in language sometimes but there just isn't the need in the written word.

 

PS I remember Mind Your Language too and I thought it was really funny back then.

indeed Sheila - I was referring to Claret's practice of asterisking words to avoid the swear-word filter.. (which go unedited) - as you rightly point out - against the rules - and Claret helpfully points us to those rules...

 

or maybe the rules are just for non-mods??

put in small writing - because children can't read small writing??

 

the single most foul and child-unfriendly content linked to that I can ever remember seeing linked on this forum is still lurking un-moderated on page 5 of the "Celebs we Fancy" thread...

I've used 'that word' referring to part of the female anatomy in front of my daughter before (and it doesn't appear in the swear filter to my knowledge), but I certainly wouldn't use the language that you've used recently Phil, and that's without digging back through the ages... You are well aware that the rules regarding language recently tightened with the influx of new, younger members.

 

Now that you've managed to drag this pleasant thread down Phil, I am going to lock it before you do yourself any more damage.
