Reminiscing for the over 40s

Recommended Posts

Richard Briers and Prunella Scales used to be in something funny - can't remember the name of the show.

Marriage Lines. I was very young at the time. :D

Remember Sing Something Simple on the radio at about 6pm, Sunday evening?

My Dad always had this on and whistled away merrily whilst cleaning the family's shoes.

You could set your watch by this little ritual.

I too remember most of these things. I do remember that on a friday when we came out of school mum would give us 4d to spend in the sweet shop. This was just enough to buy 2oz of sweets, how I longed for 8d to buy a whole quater of sweets or 6d for a mars bar!! :boohoo:

what an ungrateful child I was

Dad's first = Standard 8 (and a photo of me eating mandarin oranges "dink, dink, dink", on the running boards, I don't remember the car, but I do remember the running board and eating the food with my fingers  )

Next was an A40 - I drove it at age 10 on a field

Grandad had an A60

Then we had a Hillman Imp

Hillman Minx

Vauxhall Viva - the car I learnt to drive in.

Mum had a Fiat 500 (a couple actually - my brother used to pretend he was commanding a tank and stood up throught the sun roof - long before seat belts were even in the cars!)

My own first car was a peppermint coloured Fiesta.

What about ice cream where you bought a portion of vanilla and either put it in a cone or wafers like a sandwich.

Independent ice cream makers that were better than Walls or Lyons Maid.

The shops in the village had everything you needed, now you either have a lot of estate agents or antique shops. I liked the funny smelling odds and ends shops where dad would buy a bag of nails, screws, tacks, washers etc. - very Ronnie Barker.

Ok, so I'm a mere 30 years old ( :D ) but remember white dog poo, especially on the streets where my Gran used to live. Always wondered why it was white but now I know!

My Dad had a Reliant Scimitar and it was our family car for years and years. He only sold it about 5 years ago. My first proper car was a Reliant Kitten - you don't see many of those around! It was a year older than me :-) Loved that car, even though it frequently broke down. People never ridiculed it once they'd been in it

Dogs used to eat bones for the marrow bone jelly this caused there poo to be white.

My Dad first car was a Morris Minor split screen URB 387, its colour was rich black.

Then he had Triumph Herald, then a Triumph 1360. Followed by a Mark two ford Cortina , then a Morris Marina. I learnt to drive on a Mini and a Morris 1300.

I have owned :- 2 Hillman Imps(a bath tub on wheels), 2 Ford Fiestas,a Rover Metro GS, a ,

Suzuki Xj410, a Suzuki Vitara, 2 Nissan Terrano a short and a long wheel versions, Toyota Master ace and a Toyota Town ace.

The car I am running at the moment is a 2001 Volvo V70 SE Estate but have put this car is up for sale as I want to go back to an other Toyota. My better half has had various small cars and is now running a Honda Jazz.

What can anyone else remember of the cars they have owned?

Best regards

What about the roads etc :-

Some were cobbled streets made to last.

Cart tracks.

Some had tram tracks within them.

Over head cabling for either trams or trolly buses.

There were "pea soup" fogs.

Deep snow.

Gas lights.

New idea electric street lights.

Range Rover 4x4 were just being made.

best regards

The buses in Bournemouth and surrounding area were run like trams with tracks in the road and overhead cables. The buses were replaced by diesel and the cables removed althought the tracks were left for quite a while after that - we liked going over the bumps - dad didn't!!!

Comics I had were:

June and Schoolfriend

Bunty

Topper

Sparky

Mandy

Beano

Look and Learn

My brother had:

Commando books

Warlord

Victor

and the funny ones already mentioned.

I wish my kids had the freedom I had as a child.... but they don't and that's entirely my fault. But hey.... as a 39 and a half year old, can I contribute to the over 40s post????

Vividly remember white dog poo.

Multicoloured Swap Shop.

Why Don't You .... on TV. I try to tell my children that once you'd watched that there was nothing else to watch on Saturday TV so you had to go outside.... Oh and there were only 3 channels.....

Watching the "Test Card" after school waiting for the TV programs to start.

1/2p for a chocolate mouse or flying saucer.

1/4 lb bag of imperial mints or cola cubes.

Jubblies (sp?)

Mum feeding me "Welfare Orange" which was some concentrated orange drink mixed with water to give me vitamin C.

Getting a Postal Order from the post office to pay for things.

As a 70s child.... purple wallpaper, purple carpet and lovely state of the art pine cladding in our hallway..... oh it was posh.....

50p in the electric meter when it ran out.

Tea trays down the snowy hills in the park..... it always snowed proper deep snow every winter..... or am I just recalling this with rose tinted glasses???

The sparrows punching holes in the "gold top" milk on the doorstep left by the milkman.

SShhhhh....... pressing "play and record" on a cassette player positioned right next to the telly or the radio whilst Top of the Pops was on. Always had someone in the house talking in the background.

Simon Says.

Shelling peas...... Blanching veg to go in mums chest freezer to last all winter (bags and bags and bags of horrid stringy runner beans).

I remember being able to wander over the surrey countryside with my little dog or on my horse alone for miles without my mum being worried.

Going for picnics with it carried in my brothers pram - proper pram.

Always sunny in summer.

Always really deep snow in winter.

newspaper cut up hung on string for toilet paper.

When the first tights came out.

Liberty bodice with sort of rubbery white buttons.

Janet and John

Blackjacks and fruitsalad 4 for a penny.

chalk on blackboards.

Standing on desk to say times table

Tizer

Yogurt from the milkman just at christmas, tasted different then.

Rag and bone man

everyone running out to get the horse muck from the road for their roses................

I loved Please Sir. One of the actors, can't recall his name, came from Dartford I think and for quite a few years wrote the pantomimes for The Orchards. I hope I've got that right, memory is going.....

I remember the orange drink and also there was a rosehip syrup drink which was delicious.

Isn't it funny how this thread keeps bringing different memories back?

I remember that you were either a Blue Peter watcher or a Magpie watcher and most people were quite loyal.

Do you remember, "How"? I think that was the name of the programme where they would investigate different things and it involved someone in a native american (although we would say red indian in those un-pc days) head dress going, "HOW!"

I remember the orange drink and rosehip syrup as well, I had forgotten all about those!

I am also sure that there was proper snow back then but I have put that down to the fact that I was brought up in Sheffield. One year, our road was frozn solid about three feet deep and it stayed like that for weeks. We only went into school in the mornings to save fuel and that meant that we HAD to go sledging down the local golf course hill every afternoon. It was always pitch black by the time we finished!

Happy Days!

Ahhh, Delrosa rosehip syrup - yum!

Yes - HOW with Fred Dineage in his feathers! I remember. Then there was that miserable old man while Fred was funny. The lady was called Bunty. There was another man and I think he was Ted Moult - who then did the double glazing adverts. Oh c**p - why do I remember the TV so much, it isn't as if there was a lot. What the heck - Please Sir: "whinny whinny, that's a horse" said Dennis!

 Which road and which school?

The first year we moved to Sheffield (On Dec 1st) the snow was so deep that I couldn't get my daughters pushchair out. I took her everywhere on a little blue sledge!

We haven't had a winter like it since.

Clootie, was the Michael Rodd programme Screen Test??

Egluntine - we lived at Beauchief (pronounced Beechiff for non Sheffield people!) We sledged down Abbeydale Golf Course. I think that it must have been between 80 and 82. I was at Jordanthorpe School which became Meadowhead School, as far as I know, is no longer there! Very sad!

The church where I was christened on The Manor has also been knocked down. What with The Tinsley Towers, don't know what's becoming of the old place!

Banacek is the right spelling - George Peppard was my hero! They did a rerun on Sky a few months ago and they had a room full of enormous computers - which nowadays would most likely fit in a matchbox! I remember missing one episode because I backchatted my dad and he wouldn't let me see it as a punishment - so I tried to listen through the floorboards!

Z Cars with a very young Brian Blessed as Fancy Smith. I liked PC Sweet - but they killed him off.

Kojak's brother always reminded me of my grandmother - I used to call her Stavros!

Anyone remember Longstreet? It was about a blind detective with a lovely white alsatian guide dog.

Due South with Paul Gross - love that Mountie  !!!!

In the playground we played "who want's to play war's?" where we would link arms and gather a big line and hardly ever played war in the end! Also Stick in the Mud, British Bulldog 123, Poor Jenny Lies a Weeping, What's the time Mr Wolf? French cricket, French elastics, cat's cradle. Of course we would also play cowboys and I was always an Indian because of my long hair which was always plaited.

At the next school we played Star Trek - I was probably a Klingon - I was always the underdog or the one who got a regular tasering! Then we discovered hockey and that pretty much took up our time, or tennis.

Does anyone remember the Pixie Books series with nice animal stories like Rusty and Dinah, Little Tommy Purr, Minnie Car etc - they had lovely drawings?
