I have a significant birthday approaching :boohoo: , and my Mum wants to buy me a new watch to mark the occassion!!! :D Having never owned anything more expensive than a Swatch I'm not sure where to begin looking. Does anyone have any recommendations/advice/good brands etc. Mum has mentioned that she wants to pay "a few thousand pounds".

Lovely! 8)

Surely you can't beat a Rolex?

My Dad bought one years ago when he was abroad in the Navy. Originally it had a leather strap, but now has a cheap metal bracelet. Had it valued recently and it is still worth several hundred pounds - he paid £35 for it!

I bought a Brietling for my OH on our 10th wedding anniversary. He loves it. I personally don't like such chunky watches, as my wrists are too thin. I have a lovely Tissot, which for me, is perfect. It really is so personal isn't it? Have fun choosing. What a lovely gift!

Oh, and congratulations on the landmark birthday! :D

I wear a Cartier at the moment and I've also been lucky enough to have had a Rolex and a Breitling. My husband and I are both watch people (although he's more of a fanatic actually). Its a lot to do with personal taste - go out and try a few. Some may suit your wrist, some may not. You may prefer a lighter weight watch to a heavier weight. I wear a mansize chunky watch as I like the look of a heavy watch on me. Watches of Switzerland are really helpful and tell your mum to haggle - very important !! They'll knock a bit off if she's a genuinely interested buyer and they will also service it for you on a regular basis which is very important. How exciting !! Take your time and enjoy the research !!

My DH has just advised that whatever you do, if you are spending hundreds or thousands of £'s on a watch, you MUST NOT buy a quartz movement, only a real mechanical movement is a good investment.

I have an old Rotary watch that my missus bought me at the same time as I bought her engagement ring (seemed fair at the time!) She gleefully tells people how the watch cost more (a couple of quid!) than the engagement ring.... (sigh!)

It has had at least three new movements in the last 20-odd years and last week a new winder and crown..

I'm not sure i couold wear a watch that cost thousands of pounds - i'd lose it/break it/scratch it.... - I'd be petrified!

surely for a few thousand pounds you could have your very own Big Ben built! ;-)

Thank you very much for all the advice. I had no idea where to start my search and what to look for, so you've all given me some really useful hints and ideas about finding my ideal watch.

It's my 40th!! birthday next month - so my Mum very kindly wants to buy me a nice watch as a special momento.

What a lovely gesture, will have lots of fun chosing!

I was lucky enough to have a gift from hubby a couple of weeks ago and went for a rolex, steel and gold yachtmaster with a white face so it's girlie - wanted something nice but for everyday wear, I also looked at Cartier and Chaumet who also have lovely watches, but cant beat breitling or rolex for that chunky everyday coolness IMO :D

My DH also bought me a lovely Tissot 3 years ago, infact, it was the same christmas that I received a gorgeous engagement ring from him...still trying to work out what he had done wrong :lol:

I love my watch but have had a couple of issues when the battery needed replacing (pretty much annually) in that firstly, I found it difficult finding a Jewellers who would do it as most said that they were not insured and point blank refused to do it :? and secondly, it is no longer water resistant when the battery is replaced unless you pay to have it resealed, which round here costs about £40 a time with a three week wait

Needless to say, I thought it easier just not to wear it swimming etc.
