clare*
It may already be posted sorry. I've just noticed in the Omlet shop that they now sell Diatom for worming. Like the tub
Lesley-Jean
I'm not very impressed that they have advertised it as worming powder as I think this is a little debatable
Sheilaz
Yes, that's a point, LJ. It's brilliant against redmite, but I agree, I certainly wouldn't recommend it for worming. Think I might drop them a line.
Lesley
Will you be fierce and pedantic Sheila? - you might get another mention in a book!

Sheilaz
Will you be fierce and pedantic Sheila? - you might get another mention in a book! Well, I have sent an email to James, but hopefully it will come across as friendly & helpful. Or maybe interfering, rambling "know it all". But definitely not fierce. I don't know how. Even trying to be stern has the family rolling around in hysterics. ...and it definitely wasn't me referred to in the book! This is my first such email. I am much maligned. A man in our road, with the same surname writes weekly letters to the local paper, and even close friends think they are from my OH! They're the sort of letters that make you go , far too long and with political views which are, er, not ones that we would put in a letter if it was from us! Grrrrr..... P.S. I can't think of a good way to put in a disclaimer...WE ARE NOT RELATED...without either making it worse, or offending the other chap. Any ideas? Lesley-Jean
Thanks for contacting James Sheila You are such a diplomat that it could not have come across as anything but friendly
kannie
I've always used diatom as a wormer, and I've not noticed any problems. Do you think I should use something else as well, even if the chooks seem perfectly healthy?
Lesley-Jean
The fact that you have always used diatom as a wormer does not mean it has been effective. I have had my girls faeces checked for worms 3 times in the past year and each time they have been negative and therefore did not need a wormer anyway. I think each hen keeper should uses whatever they think the best solution for their hens and themselves. PS. I don't mean for your worms, I mean for your peace of mind
kannie
How do you get them checked? Is it expensive?
Lesley-Jean
Free to me Kannie. My husband is a diagnostic parasitologist. He charges the public about £10 I think

kannie
How do you get them checked? Is it expensive? Christine - just parcel up some chicken poo - send it to L-J marked "Fun bag - FAO hubby" Phil ... so a thousand little bags of poo arrive on LJs doorstep! Thanks Phil! Surely I'd know if they needed better worming? They'd be showing some signs of being less well, wouldn't they? I hardly dare say it now, but they're both laying well, fit and healthy, happy lively chooks!
Lesley-Jean
If, like my hens, they have never picked up any worms they will be perfectly fit and healthy regardless of what worming treatment you have given them What's all this on my door step .......
