Mrs Frugal
I don't know Laura - robins and other garden birds can so I can't see why not but perhaps someone will be along who knows for sure!

Kim Gardner
I have given our girls maggots and mealworms. They both went down a treat .I'm a bit put off of maggots - that whole fly thing turns my stomach a bit!So I much prefer to have moth larvea in the fridge than 'baby' flies !Has anyone tried dried mealworms? SarahJo
My Godmother ... who has a small holding in Worcester, has a couple of Bantams, and she gives hers dried mealworms, but did ask in her last letter if I "fired my own mealworms" .... I assume this means dry them in the oven .... . Anyway ... both larvae are fine for the girls .. dried, roasted or simply wriggling.

Guest
My girls absolutely love dried mealworms. I've been contemplating getting them some live mealworms but am concerned about how long they will keep. The Wiggly Wigglers website says "Mealworms can easily be stored in a garage or utility room because they are clean and odourless. They keep well at room temperature. Should you wish to store them for longer you can transfer them to the warmest part of your fridge, away from the icebox." I'm considering opting for their multimail scheme where one get 6 deliveries of 3 x 40g tubs. So every 2 months I would be getting 3 tubs. If I put all 3 tubs in the fridge when they were delivered would they keep for up to 2 months???

ali-s
My girls adore dried mealworms I haven't tried the live sort. I don't like the idea of keeping them in the fridge Natalie has a small mini fridge in her bedroom that she never uses, I wonder if that would keep them at the correct temperature
Sarah71
I keep mine in the shed outside and they're always ok, I've had them in there for up to 10 days no problems
Olly
I'd never get mine back in the run without dried mealworms! I only have to shake the pot and there is an undignified scramble to see who can get there first. I also use them as a distraction, at the other end of the run, so I can whip the Grub out and refill it when I'm in a hurry and can't let them out. I like them because they are easy to get hold of - Robert Dyas, garden shops - and you can keep a pot indefinitely, much less messy than opening tins of sweetcorn etc. I haven't tried live ones, but I should think they'd be just as popular! Edgeman
Hi All, I feed my girls dried meal worms every other day as a treat. I am thinking of sprinkling them out on the grass before i let them out so that they can find them in there own time, just like the "wild". Also, I re-hydrate the dried worms with boiled water for about 10 mins and them strain them, they then go back to a more natural texture and contain water. I noticed that on Spring watch this week Bill and Kate were going on about feeding meal worms, but they didnt mention re-hydrating them. I think that this is the best of both worlds as you can store them dried and then whenever you want to feed the girls just add water ! I hope this helps
The Dogmother
The only things that my girls love as much as live meal worms are woodlice - they go mad for them and have a special 'woodlice noise' that they make when they find them.
feemcg
My girls LOVE dried mealworms but I give them sparingly as they're quite pricey - its a great way to get them in the run in a hurry (they're not tempted by mixed corn any more, just look at me as if to say 'is that it?' ). Here we call woodlice 'slaters' and my girls love them too - only they make a crunchy noise when they peck them
Laura & CTB
Mine adore woodlice too but cant stand mealworms at all - I saw Prada spit one out once
The Dogmother
My girls cluster around when I'm moving things around the woodpile, and they pounce on any bugs and worms that appear. I'm always worried that a log might fall on one of them
