I'm collecting my chooks in the morning!

Recommended Posts

HI everyone!

Can you hand hold a newbie? I'm collecting my new chooks and eglu tomorrow and am very excited!

They'll be in a cat box in the car for about 1 1/2 hours - do I need to cover the box with a towel so that they are less disturbed? Do I need to stop for water breaks?

We've got the area ready - they are very lucky ladies - and have also stopped up the odd escape hole in the garden, although I'm sure they'll prove me wrong.

How soon until I can 'free range' them out of the run? Do I need to train them to come to a jam jar of treats or something?

The big question is how long do you think it will take my ladies to start laying? Will the change put them off for a while?

Thank you!!

:D

I would cover them up so that they are settled and sleepy which will stress them less. They shouldn't need to have a water break. I would get them back asap.

I wouldn't let them free range for a few days until they have got used to their new Eglu and surroundings. You don't want the wandering off do you. Also try letting them out the first time towards the end of the day so that they can have a bit of a wander around and then will want to look for home for bedtime.

They will soon learn to come once the suss you have any sort of treat, believe you me, you'll be flattened if they are out and they'll stand by the door if they are in their run.

Sorry, had to add this bit after I'd posted, do you know how old they are and what breed that way we can advise you better.

:D:D:D Good luck tomorrow, don't forget to let us see some pics and what you call them too.

I would cover them...but make sure the ventilation holes are clear.

I wouldn't stop for water breaks. The last thing you want is a frightened hen escaping and flapping about in the car. They will be fine. They can have a big swig when they get home.

No sleep for you onight! :D

Thank you! Am VERY eggcited!

The girls are a miss pepperpot and a ginger ranger from a chap who bought them from omlet last March - maybe you can tell me how old they might be, not sure how old the omlet girls are. They are coming along with their eglu, so hopefully will feel that it's familiar. He's also got some food, so there'll be no upset with what they're eating.

Well they are gorgeous and settling in well to their end of the veggie garden (which I shall have to fence even more once they start to free range soon - I do want some veg!).

They have a liking for worms and cauliflower leaves and I'm frozen from popping in and out to see if they've gone in to roost yet.

They slept all through the journey and have been bright and perky all afternoon.

:)

Great eggspectations for the coming days and fingers crossed we won't have interrupted their egg laying too much with the move. :D

Here's Obi Hen Ke"Ooops, word censored!"i (can you tell that my 12 year old named her?) with the functional end of Edna in the picture!

Edna and Obi Hen demonstrating their love of cauliflower bits (after the wormathon that my 12 year old son insisted on!)
