Guest
just thought I'd let you know you can get outdoor reared sausages at the co-op and the offer may still be on which means you get 12 sausages for £4.50! ignore the date, they've been in my freezer
Janty
That's good to know. We do buy our saussies from the local butcher usually but if we ever need some for early breafasts, our local corner shop is a co-op. I also like their little coffee cakes...made with free range eggs.
Lovemychooks
Outdoor reared doesn't mean that it is free range. I was watching Countryfile this morning and saw that Outdoor Reared pigs are kept in pens in a barn (with straw) with half a roof so they do get fresh air but are definately not free range

I was watching Countryfile this morning and saw that Outdoor Reared pigs are kept in pens in a barn (with straw) with half a roof so they do get fresh air but are definately not free range gosh, they're too clever with their wording We usually buy our sausages from the butcher too but we never buy enough and always end up nipping out to get bacon or sausage from the co-op. I suppose at least it's not intensively reared. Did they have plenty of room to move around? Did they look well treated? I also love their cakes (all made with free range egg ) but their jam tarts aren't for some reason (I guess the lemon ones must have caged egg in them)

Best regards Ian & Valerie See the bit above in red Ian. I buy my sausages from Whirlow Hall Farm. They are are more expensive than anything you can get in a supermarket.....but they are full of meat, not sawdust and eyeballs and we can see the pigs playing in the sun when we walk past the farm........and the hens! :D
Leicester_H
gosh, they're too clever with their wording Aren't they just !! I fell for that one as well. Sainsbury's have similar packs - 2 for £4.50.
Sunshine
I was under the impression that outdoor reared meant they lived outside all their lives(however since thinking about it this is what free range is) and that outdoor bred meat was born outside and then brought inside when they were older. I would have described the 'outdor reared' pigs on the countryfile programme as outdoor bred as the farmer said they had been born outside and that their mothers still live outside. It's all very confusing and labels on foods definately need to be clearer.

Guest
There are also these sausages available in most supermarkets but they only have 80% meat whereas the co-op ones have 91% meat. http://www.porkinson.co.uk/products/ the web site says... Outdoor Reared Porkinson pork comes from British pigs that have roamed free and have always had continual access to shelters to protect them from adverse weather. It does say "have roamed free" which could be clever wording to say that they have roamed free for a certain amount of time. I just wish they'd be more specific about the amount of time they "have roamed free". I bet (I hope!) that Jamie's upcoming prog about pork will enlighten us all about this outdoor reared/bred/free range confusion

chickencam
Why can't these producers just be honest so that we can shop more easily We have bought sausages from http://www.tudge-meats.co.ukin Ludlow since they came to a food fair here in the summer, we buy loads and freeze them, they are really tasty and freerange. We bought our Christmas turkey from them too
