Chookiehen
So sorry I've been calling Polo a boy . What a beautiful GIRL . S'ok, I didn't tell her! During the summer we would take her outside to brush, and there would be clouds of white fur floating up and down the street!
Lesley
She's gorgeous Shona! - thanks for posting the photo. Has she stopped piddling all over the place now?
Chookiehen
Thankfully, yes! I'm just hoping that Squidger is easier to house train!
coco
I've just found your post about Polo. She's lovely. We have a 16 month old white GSD called Keira. She's a lovely dog especially now she has stopped chewing, only problem is she is scared of other dogs and comes across as being agressive. Hopefully she will settle down as she gets older. Chookiehen
Was Keira bred from 2 white German Shepherds? The woman who we take Polo to for training was saying that there is such a small gene pool of breeding White GS's, that a lot of the puppies bred from two whites can be prone to aggression and behavioral problems. The breeder we got Polo from was reluctant to share any details of Polos background with us, almost definately for that exact reason, although we did get to see both her parents before we committed to have her, and were happy that both dogs were family pets, that showed no sign of aggression. With hindsight, we were lucky. We had already spoken to the trainer, knowing she was an expert on German Shepherds, so she had given specific signs to look for in Polos parents, and the surroundings that the puppies were kept in. With that said though, people have a habit of interpreting a lot of what large dogs do as being aggressive, just because of their size. One of our neighbours has a horrible, nippy little Jack Russel who will bite fingers and chew trouser bottoms if you go near him, but because he's the size of a large rat, people laugh it off. If Polo or Bryn were to try the same thing, the neighbours would be up in arms over 'devil dogs'!
The Dogmother
That's so true; I regularly see a yorky on my dog walks and it's as vicious as heck. A friend has 3 enormous GSDs at her livery yard and they are soft as socks, I regularly see a tiny toddler, smaller than them cuddling the biggest dog. Ruby is a bouncy nutter but not an ounce of aggression in her
coco
I think you may be right about the gene pool. Both Keiras parents were white. We have had shepherds before but never a white one. She is a fantastic dog but I don't know if I would ever have another white shepherd again as she has taken a lot of hard work and understanding to give her the confidence she has now. She is a very sensitive dog and needs thoughtful handling. I have spoken to other owners of white shepherds and they all seem to have similar problems ie nervousness and aggression towards other dogs. Keira has been to puppy class, dog classes and has had one ot one training with a behavourist who showed me how to cope with her when we meet another dog. It sounds like you have been lucky with Polo. Having said all this we love her to bits warts and all.
