Fur 'n' Feathers
Both myself & my husband have been selling boxes of 6 for £1 at work. Have been amazed at the response, people have been fighting to bagsy the next box. We have been wondering if we are going to need to expand our flock at some point. We have been joking, saying the same thing, but we only have 3 hens. If you're considering expanding with the number you already have then there's no hope for us
DominicJ
Well A 6 chuck cube costs £618(inc delivery), or £103 per chicken A 10 chuck cube costs £721(inc delivery), or £72.10 per chicken So really, it makes good financial sense to have more chickens. Absolutely However, time limits are the current constraint.... especially if we are to reach retirement without too much collateral damage Then we'll review the situation.....only a couple of years now for Fur (He's not seen this post yet )
Sue and the Spice Girls
I sell half a dozen for £1.50 each week which just about keeps the girls in food.
blackgold
My OHhas ordered me a piggybank in the shape of a hen. i am going to start selling the excess eggs and putting the money in that to help pay for their treats. i spend about £10 a week on their treats alone........ £ of them are exbatts so they deserve it. MedusA
Despite the foul (or is that fowl????) weather, the girls are laying so regularly, I sometimes have an excess, so have started selling from the door. When I have a glut, I put up a notice in the window and when I only have enough for us, I take it down. I am charging £1.50 for 6 or £1 for4, whichever they want it's the same price just a different size box. I also include a little compliment slip with blurb and pics of the girls, for the personal touch. Whenever I advertise, they go like hot cakes, so folks must be happy with the price. I put the money in a jar to put towards the girls' food and supplies, so it's not really profit, more "recycling".
Falkor
Just found this cool calculator for working out how much each egg costs you to produce - http://www.poultrykeepersalmanac.com/the_ark/howto/pka_article1.cgi If only my girls were laying! (Apologies if already been posted) I'm not touching that with a twenty foot pole *puts hands over eyes and fingers in ears* The only thing that keeps me going is the denial of how much the 'good life' is actually costing me
dancing cloud
I am not going near that calculator either I'm in the fortunate position of being able to donate the egg money to BHWT (but if times got hard, it would be used to feed the little monsters) and I'm still working on the basis that you can't put a price on the happiness they bring . That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
Al
I sell spare eggs and all proceeeds go to BHWT. I used to charge £1.20 for 4 but I've had so many spare egg boxes given to me I can now sell them for £1 for 4. But most of my 'customers' give me £1.50 or £2 because it's a good cause. Willow_Warren
I sell the surplus I have - usually 6 for £1, or 4 for 80p (the 4s aren't that popular!). When "home alone" I had quite a few spare to sell, however now with my parents home I've far less - and I've had to say "no" to a few people that have asked. I've given a few away as well. My chickens have been laying since early december and so far I've gotten £6 which went on a bag of food. And the pot of money now stands at about £9. Really need some more chooks but I'm not allowed Hannah
Omletina Kyckling
I used to sell 6 for £1 but when I joined the WI the ladies all said that was very cheap and I now sell them for £1.50, which I think is fair! the money goes towards the chicky food and future chicken purchases! Weathercoc
Our girls aren't laying yet, but already our friendly local deli owner has offered to swap any surplus for her goodies.
chooklady
I've put mine up to £1.20 for 6, "Ooops, word censored!"ody has objected, infact I wish I had space for about 30 chooks as I could sell the eggs many times over.
Christian
Sold another 18 eggs yesterday £1.50 for 6 BUT I am getting protective over my eggs and like to hide a few in the utility room as OH keeps eating them 3 poached eggs on toast yesterday Am away from home today and had a text to say 5 eggs laid by our 5 layers (one had retired )!! He is off to work too, so can't eat them I wonder how many I will get home to on Tuesday?? I think that £1.50 a box is good value, we have lots of repeat business The money goes into a chicken money box (obviously) and I open it every few months to pay for their feed and aubiose (and several hundreds tins of sweetcorn )
