rehoming on 8th feb!:) advice needed

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

I am rehoming some ex bat hens on 8th fab and cant wait.

Mum and dad have been persueded to buy me a home for the chucks as a late wedding present!:)

We will only get 3/4 chickens, will a eglu be big enough? we wont get any more and i also want to be able to build a wooden run in the garden so think maybe a eglu would be more adaptable to that?

I will get out later and try and get a photo.

We have only a small garden and i thought i could build a narrow run along the back fence and we have loads of pallets at work so i could make a stand for the eglu to optimise space and then make a wooden encousure?

Do u think i could attach it too the shed? obvioulsy making sure the shed is also fox proof incase one tries to get underneath.

I hear foxes are now worse in the cities?

thanks Katie :)

An eglu will be fine for that number of hens but the standard run that comes with it may be abit small. You would probably be best getting the converter as well to extend the run to make it a bit longer, if there is room in your garden to do this.

When it comes to converting sheds and making your own runs there are loads of idea on this forum check out this link

it shows you loads of photos of what other people have thought of.

Good luck and keep us all updated when you get your girls :D

Hi Katie,

3/4 in an eglu is fine. I have 4 in my eglu. However, as others have said if you are building your own walk-in run then you can plan the space, but if you buy the standard eglu run it is a bit small for 4 chickens and I personally bought the converter to give an extra meter run space which sounds small but makes the world of difference.

Hi Katie,

I've got 3 healthy hybrids in a (green eglu) which DH extended due to squabbles when they first arrived, I have 4 ex-batts in a (blue eglu) with the standard run I think (2 sections to build it  ) which is ok at the mo, because they are so befuddled by everything, but we are going to build a big walk-in run for them all to eventually share with the 4 Orpies we adopted last week too!! The 3 free-range most of the day anyway & we plan to let the others do likewise once they are all integrated, but needed a bigger run so I can keep it clean easier!

Now we have all these hens (white chicken)GNR(Bluebelle) , GNRGNRGNRGNR , (Bluebelle)(Bluebelle)(Bluebelle)(Bluebelle) , it will have to be a much bigger walk-in run!!!

Congratulations on your batties, they are sweeties! Mine are already realising that whenever they hear my voice I will probably have something new for them to try & are starting to come to the gate to meet me

how far are you from them? can you not go and collect it yourself? You would save yourself the delivery fee

That`s what I did. My little bro turned up with three chickens and we collected the Eglu from Omlet the same day. They were lovely too! If you are in Norwich u are about an hour from me but two from Omlet.

I got an Eglu and run in the back of my Fiat Punto but you will need something bigger for a cube.
