HENthusiastic
Hiya. Well, after reading the suggestion on omlet, I have hung up a whole cabbage for my girls to eat/play with. I had it out in the garden while they were free ranging this morning. Three of them were kind of half interested and had a bit of nibbling, but Buttercup just LOVED it . She was totally gorging on it. I watched as huge pieces of cabbage were ripped off and shoved down her throat as if she hadn't eaten for weeks! I was so concerned to see her gorging like this that when I shut them in their coop for the day, I left the cabbage in the garden. My plan had been to let them have it to play with in the coop. But I was worried she would either a. eat the entire cabbage or b. choke herself trying Should I only give it to them for short periods of time? Can a chicken overdose on cabbage? ps its a loose leaf variety!
Falkor
Not too sure if they can overdose but my three Orps polish of a little savoy cabbage in an afternoon. And don`t I know about it for the next few days..............poo picking is not possible
The Dogmother
It'll give her the runs HEN! Like us, hens prefer different foods, some like cabbage, others won't touch it

Plum
I thought it was a good thing to hang cabbages in the run to keep them occupied. What can you use that doesn't give them the trots. Don't say lettuce its soporific - Peter Rabbit told me so and its gone in under a minute Considered hiding food but that could attract rats. Hmm might try some raw cabbage myself as a tonic and natural purge. or wait and see how refreshed your chook looks tomorrow
HENthusiastic
It'll give her the runs HEN! She's just come off her exclusion 'no treats' diet by strict recomendation from Claret, due to a case of runny bum! OH told me to open their house early this morning, because the other girls would be getting gassed from Buttercups windy bottom! She was a bit runnier than recently (since the healthy diet ) but not too had. I didnt let her have the whole cabbage you know Plum: the cabbage will only work if you tie it up outside and jump for it! Thats what helps you see, its the combination of excersise, green veg and fresh air. (Photos please). ps Ive just looked up soporific and shall be using it as often as possible from now on. Mostin: Buttercup says to tell you that she looks SO beautiful the whole time that it is hard to tell the difference after her cabbage session. Ahhhhhhh, a true lady then. I thought as much when I met her breaking into your kitchen to get in the fridge and under the table for treats and cuddles . She should give my girls some beauty tips, they seem to have food and mud plastered all over their faces at all times at the moment .
