gracefruit
My daughter and I collected two new girls yesterday -- our first pure bred birds. I still can't get over how BIG they are! We've only ever had hybrid birds which I think are quite small by comparison. If you would like to see our lovely new babies... http://gracefruit.blogspot.com/2009/02/new-girls.html We've named them Alice and Ruby. Edit Claret: Pictures inserted for you - pretty girls

HENthusiastic
THey are lovely girls. Do you know how old they are? They look younger than POL. (I'm interested in how young you can put a hen with adult hens as I'm getting some new girls soon and would like to get them as young as possible). gracefruit
Thank you! The Welsummer has been laying for a few days, but the Wyandotte is only 18 weeks old. I think it will be some time before she starts. We're going to wait three weeks before introducing them to the flock. They're in a separate run that sits along side the others. My hope is that everyone will behave!

gracefruit
Thanks again, everyone! Sheila, I got them from a breeder in Doune, just up the road near Calander. He has all sorts of pretty hens -- wyandottes, welummers, cream legbars, RIRs, light sussex, and a few bantams, too. He said he's getting out of the banty business, though. gracefruit
Thank you, Claret! And thanks to everyone for their kind words. Alice the Wyandotte is very nervous, and I noticed today she's losing some feathers. I feel a bit sorry for her. Is it possible to go pure-bred crazy? I want every one I see now! FlowerAngel, what kind of birds are you getting?

marshwiggle
I'm a little bit When I first started thinking about keeping chickens I had my heart set on Wyandottes - I wanted a flock of beautifully marked chooks - and they are truly stunning. Trouble is I am sooo impatient that I ran straight up the road to the local farm and bought 3 Goldlines instead. Not that I don't love my chooks you understand, but seeing your beautiful girls reminded me of why I wanted Wyandottes!!!!! Good luck! gracefruit
Marsh, I pretty much did the same thing. I didn't really understand the differences between hybrids and pure breds -- I just wanted hens! My hybrids are sweet and they lay well, and I wouldn't trade them for anything.
