First timer - must haves?

Recommended Posts

Hello :lol:

This is my first post! and most definitely will not be my last. I have been lurking for a few weeks now and have loved reading everyones messages and tips etc. I will post an intro soon (at work at the mo so can't lurk for too long!)

Anyway, our (red eglu) arrives in a couple of weeks along with PPGNR , to be called Lightning and Sally (which is better than Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond that my 4yr old son wanted to call them!).

Right, to the point - :?: are there any other must haves I need to get in place before Lightning and Sally arrive? I have added some grit to our order but should I be getting something to worm them with, if so any recommendations?

Many thanks and looking forward to getting to know lots of fellow chook lovers!

I am so excited!

:dance::dance:

Hello Kalu and welcome to the forum :D:D

Congratulations on getting your eglu and chickens :D

Re wormer, most use flubenvet which should sort out any wrigglers that your chickens may pick up. There is a section all about worming in the FAQs section.

Some kind of bedding material - I use aubiose which is horse bedding available from equestrian supply shops. You could use wood shavings, but they take a while to compost. Shredded paper is also an option :D

A chair, camera and mug of tea is also vital :wink::wink:

Hi Kalu,

i got mine on Wednesday and the chooks are starting to settle in a bit now. I got some bokashi to help firm up the poos and make them less smelly - there seems to have been an improvement in that area already! I also got some diatomaceous earth - if you have a look on the shop bit there's an explanation of what you can use it for but basically it kills bugs so I thought I'd give it a try for in the poo tray, in the dust bath when that's established and apparently you can use it for worming too. I also got some anti-pek spray in case they didn't like each other much at first as I didn't want to be desperately looking for it when I needed it - I haven't needed it so far but have lent it to next door for her chooks! I also got some citricidal which is supposed to be good if they get colds and also for cleaning. I probably didn't really need it all at once but I wanted to be prepared so thought I might as well get it and save on postage (although I live close enough to go and pick it up from omlet hq but didn't know I could do that then!).

I've got a (red eglu) and it's fab, we're really enjoying it so far (although OH is still pretending he's not really interested! He's definitely softening!), good luck when you get them, you'll love it,

Welcome. Just make sure you have a sense of humour. :D

Food, grit, bedding, a broom, chicken watching chair and something hot to drink is all you need to begin with. The rest is fun to accumulate as you go along. and don't forget the camera so we can see. :D:D
