Old Speckled Hen
It's said that the worse you get chicken pox the less likely you are to get shingles. Chicken pox is horrid. When my daughter was little she was covered in spots. She even had them on her tonsils!! Poor thing. I had to sedate her with benylin at night time. I was the same and remember getting covered in Calamine lotion. My sister had six spots on her chest. I hated her Slapped cheek was a new one on me till my step grandson came home from school with it.
The Dogmother
I had chicken pox the first time very badly in that hot summer or '76, spots up my nose and everywhere . Promptly followed by glandular fever... fair ruined my summer hols that did. I got it the 2nd time (when I thougth I ought to be immune) from a friend's little 'un. Not nearly so bad though. I couldn't believe it when the doc diagnosed it; I thought you couldn't get it twice.
little chickadee
It's said that the worse you get chicken pox the less likely you are to get shingles. That is good news. I've been worried about getting Shingles, but I had Chicken pox really really badly when I was little.
bronze
One of you lot might know. Turns out ds and dds playgroup leader (who I have spent time with as I tend to help out and do things there) has shingles. We've all had chickenpox but I'm not quite sure of the risk (being pregnant). I've never had shingles. Anyone?

Well, so did Cleo, but she has had regular bouts of Shingles over the years, usually twice a year. Fingers crossed, not for about 4 years now though, so maybe we have seen the back of it? feemcg
Bron, you can't catch shingles from someone else, but if you have shingles can give someone chickenpox if they are not immune to the varicella virus. The reason you could develop shingles in pregnancy would be if you were a bit 'run-down', but it would probably only be mild, and not affect the baby. BeckyBoo
We've done the chicken pox round and the slap cheek, now we've got scarlet fever going round school! My lot got the strep throat and raging temperature bit followed by the cough that sounds like they're on 40 a day, but thankfully we never got the rash Mind you small boy is still quite ill with it, that's nearly a week Get well soon everyone BeckyBoo

(She once gave the OH chickenpox , he was not a happy chappy) Having only got the grown-up variety of child I was wondering the same thing. Apparently it's caused by a virus called parvovirus B19. It is also known as the 5th disease I read somewhere because it is the 5th most common disease/virus that children get DD1 had it mild, just red cheeks. DS had vomiting with it along with the red cheeks and rashes on his arms. He seems to be taking ages to get over it, poor thing. Thankfully the vomiting has stopped, he now just has the rashes. Tiggy
It's said that the worse you get chicken pox the less likely you are to get shingles. urban myth I'm afraid, shingles is the chickenpox virus that has laid dormant in your nerves, your immune system keeps it under control until you are a little bit 'down' and up it pops, very painful
