Old Speckled Hen Posted March 19, 2009 Share Posted March 19, 2009 It's said that the worse you get chicken pox the less likely you are to get shingles. Chicken pox is horrid. When my daughter was little she was covered in spots. She even had them on her tonsils!! Poor thing. I had to sedate her with benylin at night time. I was the same and remember getting covered in Calamine lotion. My sister had six spots on her chest. Promptly followed by glandular fever... fair ruined my summer hols that did. I got it the 2nd time (when I thougth I ought to be immune) from a friend's little 'un. Not nearly so bad though. Turns out ds and dds playgroup leader (who I have spent time with as I tend to help out and do things there) has shingles. I've been worried about getting Shingles, but I had Chicken pox really really badly when I was little. Well, so did Cleo, but she has had regular bouts of Shingles over the years,usually twice a year. Fingers crossed, not for about 4 years now though, so maybe we have seen the back of it? feemcg Posted March 20, 2009 Share Posted March 20, 2009 Bron, you can't catch shingles from someone else, but if you have shingles can give someone chickenpox if they are not immune to the varicella virus. The reason you could develop shingles in pregnancy would be if you were a bit 'run-down', but it would probably only be mild, and not affect the baby. It is also known as the 5th disease I read somewhere because it is the 5th most common disease/virus that children get DD1 had it mild, just red cheeks. DS had vomiting with it along with the red cheeks and rashes on his arms. He seems to be taking ages to get over it, poor thing. Thankfully the vomiting has stopped, he now just has the rashes.
