Whew! Chooks are finally eating and drinking (w/ pics)

Recommended Posts

...thanks to the stick device for locking the run door!

We received our pullets last Wednesday and had yet to see them try out the feed pellets or drink water. They mostly ate earthworms and dandelion leaves, and drank raindrops on the run (thankfully it's been raining most of the week).

Yesterday, I was (yet again) urging them to eat and drink, and poked at the glug with the door lock stick thing (technical term, I'm sure) - and Alice went to peck at the tip of the stick and accidentally dunked her head in the water instead. I could see her chicky brain go, "Oh! Wet stuff!" She then dipped her beak in and took long refreshing gulps for a good 10 minutes. Then Gertrude came to see what Alice was doing, and it wasn't long before they were both taking turns with long sips. Poor things must have been very thirsty!

The same thing happened with the grub. I used the stick to poke at the pellets, and Gertrude copied the pointy end and pecked at the pellets, too. Now they are both expertly maneuvering from feed station to drink station. And I am so relieved!!!
