margotthechicken
Today, mum said I could write what happened and put it on the forum and she said she doesn't want to write because it's horrible. Which it is. This morning, while I was in the bath, we heard loud screeching and mum asked what it was. I looked out of the window and I saw a man and a woman walking 3 dogs. Then I saw that they were calling a dog which had ran into my neighbour's garden. They got the dog back and went home, then I looked into the back garden and saw Shirley clucking and screeching, next to Clucky, who looked dead. I ran over to get her and she was alive, but in a bad way. Clucky couldn't open her eyes and blood was running down her beak and she couldn't move. There was a large bend in the wire and all of my mum's flowers were squished. It turned out that the dog had got into our garden and it had tried to get Clucky through the fence. I cried really loudly and dad came out to see what was wrong. He saw Clucky, whose eyes were jammed shut and a bloody beak, and said that she had been attacked by the dog that got lost. Myself and my brother, Edward got Clucky to stand up, but she wouldn't eat or drink. Ed got her to drink a little and she stood up. We then lay her in the nest box and put some fresh water and food in there. She couldn't see any of it, as her eyes were jammed shut. After a day of nursing her and giving her drinks, she refused to drink or eat. She didn't do any more poos ( Yuk) and we realised that she wasn't looking good with no strength . She hasn't gone yet but I have a feeling that she isn't going to pull through. She is missing loads of bum feathers and a few on her back. Lets just pray. xx Edited September 26, 2009 by Guest
ClaireG
I'm so sorry to hear about poor Clucky. I have got everything here crossed for her and you.
margotthechicken
Thankyou. Poor Ellie, she keeps going out and giving Clucky water, (Ellie is ten by the way). I let her write a thread, as I know it helped me when the girls were attacked by a fox. I suggested that Ellie post a new topic as I know that my fellow Omletiers will give her words of comfort, as you have. Thank you. xx

Mrs Frugal
Oh goodness, what a horrible thing to happen . I have everything crossed for Clucky. Are you able to get her to a vet tomorrow in case there's anything they can do for her? Thinking of you all.
Egluntyne
Poor Clucky. Very sorry to hear it. Have you got some Rescue Remedy? A few drops might help her cope with the shock. I would keep her warm, on a padded hot water bottle, and if she is capable of drinking, syringe dribbles of water gently into her beak so that she doesn't get dehydrated. blackgold
What a horrible thing to happen. do you know these people? I would have a word with them and tell them what has happened. Dogs that could do that should not be offlead... Love Sue and fingers crossed for Clucky.

margotthechicken
Hi. This is Ellie here. Clucky has made progress, as she can drink but as she can't see, we have to put water into the beak and she swallows it. She is hanging on, despite the fact that her eyes are swollen and can't open. The blood coming from the nostrils has stopped and she can stand, squat, cluck, lie down and walk a short distance on her own. I really, really hope that she hangs on and recovers as she is one of the only ones that have survived the fox issue and her and a few others are all i have got. She is weak and can't walk very far, but she is doing healthy poos and is being warmed and comforted by Miriam , Margot and Kylie . I am really upset but reading your replies made me realise that you all understand. I know that she is just a hen, but i really love her and i am really attached to her. Her eyes are all swollen and she can't see where she's going, so she bumps into things. it's horribe watching her suffer. Please give me more ideas on how to help her, before it's too late. thankyou for replying, it really helps. Ellie xxxxxxxx
Eggquisite
Oh hello, Have just read your post.. how traumatic... I hope the dog owners have been to say how sorry they are..poor little Clucky.. we have everything crossed for you & Clucky... I'm afraid we don't yet have much experience to advise on how to help her, but I'm sure you are doing all you can. Patricia W
Please take her to the vet. If she can't be helped to recover, the vet will put her to sleep. it isn't enough just to leave her and hope and pray....
Ain't Nobody Here
I'm so, so sorry to hear about poor Clucky . What a horrible shock for you all . I hope you manage to get her to a vet (I'm inclined to agree with Patricia) .
margotthechicken
Hurrah! Clucky lived the night, she is walking and drinking. Her eyes are jammed shut and gooey still but its an improvement. She is looking good, and we think that her eyes haves popped, so they are swollen, but when the swelling goes down hopefully, she can open them. Not sure about a blind chicken! She is clucking again, but we still have to put the water in her beak for her to drink! She can walk round the coop, i think she is trying to get her strength back. She is flapping again and her little pals are putting straw round her to keep her warm. I don't really want to take her to the vet because they will have her put down. She has a chance to live. If Clucky dies, i want her to die with me, because i love her. Still not eating, but she's looking ok.She is pulling through so far! lets hope she carries on! Ellie ( Margot's daughter) xxxxxxxxxxx P.S Thanks for the lovely replies, it's really nice.
margotthechicken
Mum here. Clucky will be seing a vet this morning. I have told Ellie what I think needs to happen. Many thanks for your replies. x
Sheilaz
Clucky has the best chicken mummies, I'm sure she knows that, & I know you will do the best for her. What a terrible incident, very frightening. Good of you to post Ellie. It shows that even when our gardens are safe daily, we never know what threats there might be. Best wishes to you all, I think you're being very brave after a terrible shock. xx
dancing cloud
Glad to hear she's made it so far and is being so well looked after. Omlet good luck vibes winging their way to you that the vet can help her even more . Loads more ((hugs)) to all of you from me and mine, and a special gentle cuddle for Clucky. Egluntyne
You could gently bathe her eyes with warm water or weak tea (no milk, no sugar!). The latter is mildly antiseptic and very soothing. I agree that it would be in her best interests to get her looked over by a vet. Things sound promising though.
katieadams
How brave you are Ellie, your mum must be very proud of you. I understand you want to avoid the vet in case she needs to be put to sleep, but you are clearly a very clever girl and you love Clucky very much so I know you will take her if she needs it. Good luck to Mum, Ellie and Clucky, we'll all be thinking about you xxx
Ain't Nobody Here
Hi Ellie . Any news on Clucky? We've all had our fingers crossed for her today .
fluffyknickers
Poor thing, she is a very brave little chicken. The vet will be very kind I am sure and look at her and understand your worries but will be able to give you advise on what needs to be done for her. When i had a cat that I loved so very much I didnt like the thought of her being in pain at all because I loved her so much. Let is know how she is. margotthechicken
I am amazed. OH cleaned the little girls eyes, and they're now open and blinking. Clucky is walking, looking around and clucking. She even laid an egg today! Ellie has been giving her water and Rescue Remedy in a syringe. She is flapping, perching and jumping up to perch. Things are looking good. The other girls were so sweet last night, when we put Clucky back into the nest box the other girls crowded in and started to pull straw over her back, then they snuggled up next to her, as if they knew, as if they wanted to keep her warm. These creatures are so intelligent, it really makes you sit up and think about caged birds. I have never knowingly bought eggs from caged hens, and I never shall, but surely this adds to the argument for doing away with this barbaric form of food production. Thankyou all for your thoughts and advice, I shall keep you posted, but I think Clucky was deeply shocked. Ellie is certainly a lot more optomistic. margotthechicken
Ellie here! Quite a few mixed feelings today, as i am happy and sad. The happy part is, that it's actually fun feeding her, it makes me feel like kind of a vet, which i want to be when i'm older. The sad part is that she has to be looked after, in the state that she's in. I am absolutely amazed that she is still alive. I thought she'd have gone last night, hence the baggy eyes with no sleep. I am glad that she has stayed and pulled through, but we are still in the danger zone. If she stays alive tonight, then WOW, what a hardy hen! I really hope she lives, i really do. She's started eating again, but she can't on her own. We have made a pellet porridge, including banana ( her favourite) and mushy pellets. She is eating it, through a syringe. I am worried, because she can't feed herself, but we have made an agreement that we will dab her eyes with cotton buds 3 times a day until they are back to normal, and i have agreed that i can syringe-feed her water and a few syringe fills of porridge pellets every morning and do the same every night after school.Hopefully, she will be better in no time! Thankyou for your replies, theyv are very kind and help me, mum ( and Clucky) through! Keep the replies coming, and ideas to soothe and calm her. Hope all your hens are well. Peaches
I've read this thread with my heart in my mouth Please keep us up to date with Clucky's progress. I've only had my hens 10 days, but I'd be devastated if anything happened to any of them. It sounds like you're really taking good care of the girl. Come on, Clucky, get better!
