Help, I think I have a cockeral!!!

I bought two Poland Chickens from someone who said they reared them from eggs, but I think now they are 14 weeks that the Black one is a COCKERAL..How can I tell?...And if I do have a Cock with the other 16 hens, will I be in big trouble?.... and, are they really noisy?...as I would even consider keeping the two Polands in separate houses..EEEEKK!!

look at pics and see if you can tell please!!!

They are 14 weeks old.. his red bits and tail look a bit suspect.. or is it the breed?

Cinnamon, I see you live in Henley...does his noise upset the neighbours?..he is gorgeous...yes I think i deff have a cock!!...I hope I can keep him!

 

Well I am actually a couple of miles out of town in a small village & Indiana isn't the only cockeral in the village, so he doesn't bother the neighbours!

 

But for a small bloke he is VERY loud!

We too have a Polish cockerel and love him to bits. He is noisy but we have lovely neighbours. We notice he crows most when he loses "his girls". Their eyesight is poor so be resorts to calling for them when he loses sight of them.

 

We suspected she was a he for a few weeks, but it wasn't confirmed until he crowed!

I'm pretty sure it was about 20 weeks before we were sure - when he crowed. We thought we'd worked out how to sex them and had chosen 3 we were sure were girls BUT 2 out of 3 were boys!

 

We had been told that those with the most rounded heads were girls - but it didn't work...

 

So if you are hatching Polands, make sure you have room to keep them for 5 months and know what you are doing with the boys you don't want.
