Newchick
Just wondered if anyone has any opinion. I have the option of getting 3 x RIR Hybrids or 3 x Black Rocks (from two different suppliers). I was going to get 2 B Rocks and 1 RIR to have a bit of a mix as I have an Eglu which will only take up to 3 chickens as far as I am aware. Wondered if anyone has any experience of the temperaments of the two breeds. Really want some friendly laid back chickens as I have two small boys. Are the Black Rocks a bit unfriendly? craftyhunnypie
Noooooooooo. Black rocks are very friendly, very nosey, inquisitive & have a tendency to sit on your knee or arm. We have 3 of them. Emma.x
Griffin
I'll disagree My Black Rock is a lot more nervy than my RIR hybrids I have two of the RIR and my three year old can carry them around, there's no way the Black Rock would stand for that. She keeps her distance from everyone.
Blackrocksrock
I have 3 black rocks and they want to come in the house - when I open the door they come running up for ?? treats I expect and are really friendly = just need to shout them if they are going too far up the garden and they come belting back. rabbitfluff
My black rock is easily the friendliest of my 4. My knee is frequently used as a perch by her if I happen to be sat in the run reading, though I suspect that's just because she thinks I'm hiding treats somewhere! (That is normal behaviour isn't it? Reading in your chicken run? Phew!)
mostin
I have to say that my black rock is the most distant of all my girls . She gets cuddled once a week under sufference, just so we can check there is nothing wrong with her. She is unfortunately the strongest of my girls as well, so when she starts flapping, sometimes only my hubby can make her behave . By the way, reading in your chicken run is perfectly normal behaviour, doesn't everybody find they have to fit a bookshelf in their chicken supplies hut after a couple of months . ..lay a little egg for me
Our black rocks are not as friendly as the Goldline, but more so than the Speckledy. However, I think it is all down to individual temperament. Goldlines do have a reputation for being friendly though...
craftyhunnypie
Every chook is different - best to see what chook comes to you when you go see them - see what will allow you to pick them up & fuss them. I too have a goldline - my black rocks are friendlier though. Emma.x

debbier
I was just about to ask a similar question, so am glad I spotted this thread. I'm just getting ready to take the plunge with my first chooks and eglu, and thought I'd go for three hens, based on reading that three are better than two? I was planning on getting them from omlet, so would need to order an extra one on top of their starter kit, which contains two. Does it matter on the mix of them: are the two types a similar size? I thought it might be nice to have two of one and one of the other. Debbie

Debbie You can mix them up, it doesn't matter- I have one of everything you could get a third hen from another supplier (as long as you get it at the same time ) and have 3 different hens, they are all much the same size.
