We're all planning walk in runs! PART 2!

Recommended Posts

well quick update... at Nigel's request, and it was a sweet and reasonable request, the 'Nigel' WIR has been renamed the 'NJ' (that's for Nigel and James, James being Nigel's very good sidekick)... the extended official name of it now being 'the NJluxchooks' (James's idea  )... I was VERY keen to take pictures, but by the time Nigel and James were down, it was raining buckets, and when I came back from the schoolrun it was dark... but I will be back soon with pics, I promise...

I am very pleased with the run, it is sooooo lovely to be able to go out and stand with the chooks, with a roof to keep the rain out, and be able to bend down and stroke them... I should have done this years ago!!

I asked Nigel to come back to build one for the bunnies, so will have to work on OH to see if in all the recent extravaganza (puppy, wir, dog runs and so on), we can still afford a full bunny run... It would be so sweet to be able to walk in with the bunnies and stroke them and feed them carrots...

Well here we go, introducing the NJLuxChook...

This is my glug and grub station:

I've ordered woodchip, as I didn't want to reuse the old stuff (it was highly time to change it), so once this gets here we'll put it in and they'll have that to scratch and play with rather than just plain concrete slabs...

I really like it, and find it looks nicer in the garden than the original cube run...

As you may have realised form other threads in the"chicken" section ive finally got my wir up and running, its been a bit of a lengthy process what with the weather and getting someone to lay the pavers, either too busy and/or too expensive, to save money i dug it out, put the hardcore down, hired a wacker plate and laboured for my mate who layed the pavers,

anyway here we go,

a big pile of timber ( 248 metres to be exact)

PA101230.jpg

some of the timber cut to lengths for the panels

PA101231.jpg

the saw i borrowed was a god send, i couldn't saw a piece of wood straight to save my life

PA101233.jpg

panels put together

PA111234.jpg

panels cuprinolled, allready had 3/4 of a tin in the shed doing nothing

PA141236.jpg

weld mesh stapled on, that stuff should carry a health warning, especially when you get to near the end of a roll

PA141235.jpg

where the overgrown rockery was, stringed out for the wir, twas a bit foggy that day

PB211286.jpg

base dug out and hardcore down

PB221288.jpg

never took any pics whilst the base was been layed or the run constructed, sort of forgot was rushing about getting as much done as poss inbetween the rain

run up and ready for new tennants, guttering still to finish and only half the roof fixed down, some future tennants showing an interest but they will have to wait until the wernlas gang arrives,

the wernlas gang arrived on the wednesday night and had the wir to there selves until saturday when the existing 4 were introduced into the wir, they had had an hour or so free ranging together on thursday and friday, very few problems and all getting on really well, the wernlas gang do stick together all the time though.

the run just needs a few finishing touches, not quite sure what yet, bad condensation on the underside of the roof but with the ammount of rain weve had the hemp is holding out really well, quite damp in places but not soggy.

Well done! it looks really well made, much better than I could do!

Ahhhh, thats a clever way of having just a little door for the cube!

I've been trying to think how we can adapt some aviary panels in the future to others on here, with sliding rooves/roofs ( :eh::lol:)

.... not that we have a cube yet

all the grubs & glugs are new or newish but i do scrub them inside & out every few weeks anyway,

i must admit i am quite pleased with it , although the roof didnt quite turn out how i planned,

Thank goodness for this forum, I got so much inspiration and education from the various WIR threads! I was quite taken with the Aviaries 4 U runs, but being in the US, I didn't think that was an option for me, so my husband decided that we should build one together. Well, after a week of researching here and a month's worth of weekend work, it's finally done:

First I modeled it in Second Life, to see how the proportions would look.

After a backbreaking weekend of laying down concrete slabs, we finally got to the assembly part.

Fast forward to a month and about 1100 USD later, all done and moved in:

Thanks to a raccoon attack, I only have the lone hen, but I'm hoping to get 2 more pullets in the next week or so, and I've done sort of a quick and dirty solution of hanging up some lightweight poultry mesh in the interior to separate out 1/3 of the run for introduction space.

The mesh is supported by wooden beams hanging on hook and eye hardware, so it can be removed easily. The doghouse has wooden roosting bars inside and will hopefully act as a "temporarly eglu."

hellymisscloud and I got a WIR as a xmas present for the new chooks: we managed to get one on ebay for £50 all in!:shock:

it has three sides, backs onto the side of the garage and is made of very strong, well treated timber, and weld mesh with a well made, secure, door and a corrogated metal sheet roof. ShaunW has had a look today and approves!

We were very lucky with the ebay purchase: it was listed as a dog run and didn't have any photos printed, we had to ask for those. It must have put eveyone else off bidding and we were the only bidders.

We've put it on the concrete drive in the back garden and are now seeking ideas for kitting it out for TALL chooks.
