Valkyrie Posted June 1, 2009 Share Posted June 1, 2009 Found her dead this morning. What a grotty day. The little peeps obviously miss her - sort of, but tucked into their breadfast well. Trip to the vets with them all. The vet didn't think there was any point doing a post mortem. But we feel that she may have eaten too many potato leaves, or possible blood poisoning from a couple of weeks ago when she caught her comb on a rose - although I was quick to splash on the wound powder. With regard to the chicks, he said they were in fine fettle - no lice or mites and in really good condition. It was small comfort. DD a little upset and is handling it well, but as usual I feel more responsible and can't think what else I could have done to prevent it. She was a good mum - probably too good. Then as if to rub it in, the Miele people put the wrong item in my order and while I was on "hold" Allelujah was being played. When I had my breakfast and turned on the TV to see the news there was Brian Adams singing "not worth dying for", so that really made me bawl. At the moment the peeps are out free ranging and digging up the garden (they have been dosed with some Flubenvet - I mentioned that the girls were due and should I give the littlies some and he approved). Sioux and Apache have also been dosed - and as usual Piggy Sioux snatched more than her share. Nice to see some things never change. Also the peeps are so much nimbler on their feet - they sneak in, snatched some sweetcorn and gobbled it up before the bigguns realised what was happening. Apart from the odd lunge, the big ones rarely make contact and all 5 are wandering around together. Oh, and the potatoes have now been fenced off as best we can. The little'uns are doing fine without mum - but I think the big girls are looking for Cheyenne - and the whinge that accompanies something that they don't like. Oh, and the vet said that there is a lot of salmonella going around this year. I know it probably seems small comfort right now, but it's great news that the rest of your flock and wee ones are all healthy - it would be heartbreaking if they were passing something round. He did say that it would be fine to bury her in the garden if we wished, but I didn't want to in case there was anything not nice lurking that would come back to trouble us. Now I am worried about the maran being the odd one out - she and C were inseperable while the other sussex girls wandered off quite a lot. At the moment she is happy enough and all 3 are all together at the moment, so I hope there won't be the cliquey thing going that the orpies had. I asked for their ashes (I asked for them to be cremated together as they'd been such good pals and inseparable throughout their three years with us) to be returned to me, and we're planting them under a special shrub in their honour and memory, once we've got the new garden layout sorted and the walk in run for our new girls built. It's a bit tough dusting their ashes in the little box each week, but it's slowly getting less painful! We do get attached don't we? Deservedly too, they're so cute! Squirt took a sultana from me though, so I'm winning them over. Their crops are bulging (hope its all good stuff, but the way they are digging up the dirt, I suspect there are a lot of bugs in them! Yep and to top it all I squashed my arm in a door, dropped a stone on my little finger (think of Tom - and Jerry - howl) and now have broken a glass dish that used to belong to mum (OH highly delighted as he hates them). Obviously minor in comparison to this morning, but more swearworthy! Now Ghost is on Channel 4 and I tuned into that song arghhh! Feeling much better now, but still guilty.
