One Of Our Chicks Has Died.

Recommended Posts

I found our Dorking girl dead this morning  She'd shown no signs of illness, they all have massive appetites and seem very lively so I don't know what was wrong with her  I always check on them just before I go to bed and she was fast asleep in a huddle with some others at midnight last night but dead at 7am

The others all seem fine this morning but then again so did she yesterday so I'm very worried.

Lost two of our baby black Orps this week. Just nine chicks left now. I'm sure it's Coccidiosis so they've been on Coxoid for the last few days. Thankfully the nine (1 black Orp, 1 blue Orp, 2 Silkies, 2 Dorkings, 1 Poland & 2 Aras ) all seem fine, eating loads, very lively and feathering up nicely. They're three weeks old and usually would be moving out to the garage now but I'm keeping them in where I can keep a closer eye on them. The girls were so upset this afternoon over the Orp, we knew it was very ill and I'd said I didn't hold out much hope for it. They all cuddled it and just fifteen minutes later it was gone.

It's all gone so wrong this time

Sorry to hear about your chicks, so sad. Hope the rest are okay. I started mine on the chick crumb with coccoid to begin with as they were going to be around my older broody hen and all her broody poos. Felt happier being on the safe side, even though I am not a fan of unnecessary meds. Seems strange if they were in the garage that they contracted cocci though - thought that was just from ground and other birds?

They weren't in the garage, they're still in a gigantic rat cage in the house with an electric hen. They had the right symptoms for it, depression, ruffled feathers & bloody runny poo. Thankfully the remaining 9 seem fit and well. The cage & hen were disinfected before use so I don't know what went wrong.
