Help! Been asked to do a chicken stall - it's today!!

Recommended Posts

Well I've just got home - and I am shattered! I was helped brilliantly by Hazel, Vivihen, Saronne, Rosie and Fizzle Knit - a very, VERY BIG thank you ladies! At times we stood doing nothing but natter, but most of the time we were very busy. We had pics of our own hens, Did You Know? ... posters; Vivihen did a 'guess how many eggs laid in a year' competition with proceeds to BHWT; we gave away loads of free cake and back copies of practical poultry and gardening mags and I did two hard boiled eggs - 1 battery and 1 free range, plus I cracked two 'fresh' eggs onto a plate - one of my girls laid today, and one bought fresh from Aldi yesterday. People were amazed at the difference! Loads of people asked about keeping chickens and you could tell those that already had chickens - we kept hearing 'oh, CHICKENS!!' and the threee girls I took had loads of attention and treats 8) They were very well behaved, no pecked little fingers although loads were poked at them! I took a tub of chopped cucumber and quite a few children were keen to feed them! A brilliant day - and the weather was perfect, if a little too hot - I think I've got sunstroke! 8)

I forgot to report back after my girls went to the produce show last week - they had some whole sweetcorn that kept them going all afternoon and behaved very well and like you a lot of interest - in the girls and the eglu they were in.

Not been around online much so only just seen this thread. Glad it went well, Snowy. :D

I always do a "Meet the Chickens" stall at our allotment fairs which always goes down well. We sell free range eggs and hand out leaflets for BHWT and Omlet as well as posters of photos of all my girls. I usually take the two Silkies as they are the cuddliest and most child-friendly of my girls. I've had several positive comments from visitors saying they only really came to see the chickens. It usually yields a few promises to look into it when I explain how easy it is to keep your own hens.

The more converts the better!

Good idea about comparing the eggs, BTW.

Edited to add pics

Lovely to put a few names to faces at last.

Yes - that was lovely for me too.

I love putting names to faces. It was great to meet everyone ! :D I really enjoyed the event. Thanks for organising it, Snowy. It went really well.

Sorry I couldn't stay til the end, but hope I stayed long enough to help with that rush of interest!

Looks fab Snowy.

Can I ask what is on the Chicken Facts posters on the front of your stall? I can only read the "Chickens eat Slugs" one and would love to know what the others say. :D

 I can't remember!

One said: you don't need a cockerel to get eggs; erm, the next one is: there are over 200 breeds of chicken. I'll have to go and look up the rest again!

A rather belated response from me as I've been away for a few days, but just like to add that I enjoyed meeting some fellow chicken-owners. Thanks Snowy for organising the stall. I think it went really well, and lots of people seemed interested in looking into having chickens in their gardens. A fair few already had chickens and just wanted to talk about them :)

It was also personally successful for me, as I spoke to some other stall holders, and one lot of them were organising local services. I managed to sign up my elderly mother-who lives in the village where the fete took place, and they have contacted her and persuaded her to come to their coffee mornings and shopping trips. I'm really grateful, as my mother was getting a bit isolated after most of her local pals had either moved away or died. She has recently had to give up driving (at 87 years so not doing so bad) and that has caused her problems getting to her social outings. So quite a good day and lovely weather too.
