Help! Been asked to do a chicken stall - it's today!!

Recommended Posts

I've been asked to have a stall at a village fair to promote keeping chickens in a garden! The theme of the fair is environmental issues and where our food comes from.

I have a gazebo and thought I could take a couple of the girls.

I've contacted Omlet and BHWT for promotional material.

Thought I could use some of the Omlet schools info, especally colouring pictures, to give out to children.

Can anyone come up with any other ideas for what I could do?

Does anyone want to join me for the afternoon? (It is on 12th September in Thurnby, Leicestershire.) 8)

Ooooh I wish it was nearer I'd love to help, or visit at the least! Could you get pictures of your girls blown up to A3 size and put them about the place? And do you have ex-batts? You could do before and after shots. Have samples of food for people to see - grit, corn, pellets mash etc. See if anyone has any different colour eggs you can have on display (but hardboil them first! :D ) You could put up "Did you know?" posters like

Did you know you don't need a cockerel to get eggs

Did you know it costs about 3p a day to feed a domestic hen

Did you know.......can't think at the minute but you get the idea. Then a list of nearby breeders, BHWT, websites Omlet etc for people to take away - just a little strip of pre preinted paper would do

And instead of playing "pass the chicken" and stressing them out by being handled a lot you could do a "chicken handling session" where at a certain time you get one of the girlies out and give a little talk and maybe let the kids have a cuddle - I took my most bomb proof hen to school a year orr so ago and the kids LOVED stroking her and because it was only for a short while she wasn't bothered at all!!

Good luck, sort of thing I love doing - it's amazing how you get roped into doing this stuff when people know you're a chook keeper :D

wow, brill ideas from Bex! Sounds great, wish I was closer! :D

maybe you could have photos of cakes, mayonnaise, quiche, coleslaw, lemon curd, custard, custard tart etc and remind people of all the yummy things they can make with their own eggs.

Sounds 8)

Maybe start collecting feathers from the run + take those with you, as BeckyBoo said take some feed with you, different types of eggs (quail, turkey, chicken, bantam, LF, geese) -I'd blow them instead of hardboiling them.

For kids you could print off a few songs and stick them up, colouring in is a good idea, if you did take different types of eggs you could play match the egg to the bird. Photos of chicks growing up into chickens could be good.

Brilliant ideas, thanks all! Love some of those - specific times for chicken handling; might take some cake cut into small pieces for people to try; Did you know? posters - I'd thought about posters, but that sounds like a good format! 8) Selection of eggs - like that one too!

Re help - the more the merrier! If we don't get any customers we can have a mini meet and sit around drinking tea! Even if you don't think you know much, it's surprising what you will have picked up by then!

I've already got public liability insurance for fairs and it covers selling food, so I'm covered on that front. This is great - keep the ideas coming! (I'm getting excited now!)

Just bumping this back up again as it is only a couple of weeks away.

If you can come, let me know.

If you can come and can help by doing something in advance, ie baking or posters, again let me know!

I have loads of info from BHWT; a coop and some books from Merrydale; the offer of an eglu from Omlet (I need to chase that one!)

Getting eggcited now :D
