poachedegg
Went for a drive to Garden Poultry today as undecided whether to get some more chickens now or to wait until September for some ex batts and there was a sign saying they had sold out....usually they have so many, so I was really surprised! They are supposed to be getting some more next week, so will give her a call to see what they are getting. This chicken lark ain't arf getting popular! brambles
I went with my friend on Saturday morning - she was gutted! The owner tells us that she's getting 300 birds in on Thurs night ready for sales to begin on Friday. My friend will be returning, she's got an empty eglu in her garden. We hope to go Fri after school. The owner is a lovely person and has been amazed by the popularity of keeping chickens. She's got all sorts on order and will tell you if you phone. The ones coming in are 15 weeks, apparently. I remember amber stars but not much else! The website's down as her brother organised it but there's been a problem with the password. Guest
we got eleanor and lucy from them. They had loads when we went, I'm really surprised! Mind you, we have been recommending them to everyone. One of our allotment neighbours got girls from there after 2 sheds told him about them.

The Dogmother
It could just be a personal issue, but a lot of stockists are low on stock - there has been such a run on backyard hens recently that the hatcheries have had trouble keeping up with demand. Autumn
My parents went a few weeks back and bought a dozen, they are going back this week for more. Her birds are nice and healthy and reasonably priced too. x
craftyhunnypie
Try here for hybrids - I've had a lot of mine from here http://creagmhorpoultry.co.uk/ They are absolutely brilliant! Good luck. Emma.x
jomaxsmith
there has been such a run on backyard hens recently that the hatcheries have had trouble keeping up with demand. Sadly, there is a problem with unwanted backyard hens too - my Mum's local paper recently ran a story about an animal shelter that was over-run with hens whose owners hadn't thought it through properly Jo

I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who pitch up to buy hens without having throught about it at all. A couple I spoke to on Sunday had popped by on a whim to buy some hens, didn't have any housing and 'would it be alright to keep them in the kitchen until we buy a coop?' *Grrrrr*
craftyhunnypie
Some people eh? Were they planning on keeping them in the hostess trolley or something? Honnestly! Emma.x
The Dogmother
They seemed to think that they would be like kittens and could be kept contained in a box Can you imagine the state of their kitchen floor if they'd done that?!
Yolky
keeping chickens can be so rewarding but you do have to do your homework first and get yourself set up. They sell chooks at our local garden centre now. They had in a pair of warrens the other day, they looked only about 10 weeks I think. They look so teeny at that age, I think that someone who has had no chicken experience before wouldn't realise how big they do grow. They were also in weeny arcs in there, which were fine whilst they were so small but I wouldn't want to keep any full sized hens in it. alih
Thanks, Poached, knew I could count on Omleteers to help into research as to whether I could squeeze a bluebell and a black rock in with my girls
The Dogmother
There was a scam going on - certainly around here anyway - the chicken rustlers were following the delivery lorries around and watching where they went, then going back after dark to steal all the chooks! Our local lot got caught though. It wasn't terribly subtle as they were stealing from outlets who all used the same supplier.
Guest
...Lisa & her hubby is lovely and I love their new log cabin house! Kit they are very nice people and he knows his chickens and spent time with us before we bought our girls. They were working (not sure about living) out of a big static caravan when we went. The caravan is still there, however just as you go in the gate, on the left hand side, they have had a Log Cabin built.
