You can freeze a bottle of water and give that to them and they might lay beside it, keeping them cool, my spaniel used to do this until she learned that the utility room floor is freezing so she goes in there and flattens her tummy to the ground

Here's Cookie trying to chill out this afternoon. Its quite warm here this afternoon but there's a gentle breeze coming through the kitchen door. She really suffers in the heat as her fur is so thick.

She has a look of "why are you disturbing me?" on her face :D

this is chunk my staffie. he hates the heat.

DSC00358-1.jpg

last summer my hubby took him for a walk about half seven in the morning because it was a lot cooler for him. they walked up a local mound which takes about ten munites to climb and they have done it hundreds of times. when they got to the top chunk collapsed and had a fit. my hubby had to carry all 27kg's of dog back down. i met them at the bottom and rushed chunk to the vets. he had a temperature of 107! he was given oxygen and hosed down and made a full recovery. unfortunatley i don't think he has forgotten because every time the weather is hot chunk sits in our shower cubicle and trembles. he gets so worked up he pants like a steam train and nothing calms him down.

he loves it when i hose the garden off in the evening as he jumps through the sprey and gets completely soaked.

if your dog does become too heated the best action to take is as follows. soak a towel with cold water and drape it over your dog gently add more cold water to the towel. give you dog plenty to drink. the easiest way is to fill a squirty drinks bottle as you can direct it into your dogs mouth.

if your dog does not recover quite quicky contact your vet.

most dogs will keep themselves cool. so hopefully you will never need this advice.

thanks he is a beauty he is now six years old and is actually a stud with a pedigree a mile long unfortunatley because of his size we haven't had any luck finding a suitable girl friend for him :( which is a shame because he has such a lovely nature and would sire some wonderful puppies. one of which we would have to keep  .. to give you an idea of just how wide he is we brough a leather staffie collar, the sort with studs and staffordshire knots on in brass it cost almost £40, unfortunatley when we went to put it on him it would not fit around his neck!! he is our big soft beastie!

Cookie is a little bit smaller than most standard poodles that we've seen but is a fairly big dog!

Her tail is normally curled up on her back. I think that lots of people think that its been cut into a pompom shape until she uncurls it. In the photo you can see that her tail is curled up.

Here's a photo I took last year on the sea wall at Dymchurch with OH and YS, you can see her size in it.

We love her to bits but she really does get too hot with all her fur.
