Anybody know anything about RAF planes?

Recommended Posts

It's driving me potty. RAF Odiham have had a number of aircraft - old and new flying and roaring around this afternoon. Mostly behind the treeline except for some WW2 (?) formation flyers (single propellers). But I did see a huge bomber with a delta wing. Not a Vulcan - looked like a smaller version of Concorde, but Typhoon? Tornado (doubtful). The nearest I could find was a USAF plane with a caption of Nimrod - it certainly was not! Arghhh! I bet the Red Arrows were there too, but they all were zooming round the opposite side rather than here - except for the old ones (typical). There was I standing in the front garden jumping up and down trying to see. Apologies for the earthquake!

Ahh, they've changed their photo of a "Nimrod" I knew it wasn't that plane - we get them a lot when Farnborough has the airshow.

Kind of clutching at straws with the Typhoon - wings too narrow and it was such a heavy thing, but sleek with a fighter smoothness. It was dark grey/green-ish and luckily the clouds were a bit lighter! Definitely a delta wing - hence the Concorde look-alike with regard to the angle.

It would have been around 5 or just before when I caught a glimpse and probably making it's way home. The aircraft had been around for some time before that but I couldn't see. Tantalising sounds but no view! Then it went quiet for a while and I assumed when I heard the noise again that the show had finished and they were off home. The flying 4 oldies passed over shortly after - only I saw 3 heading northwards - so one is missing!

I was chatting to mum on the phone at the time and I said it looked just like the old Vulcans. Perhaps it was. It's been a long time since my brother brainwashed me with his Airfix catalogues. Mum says she still has one!

I'm so glad - I shall brag to little brother now. And he was up at Farnborough yesterday - he never mentioned family day at Odiham! I'm glad you saw it Jlo - it was more your side - I expect you got quite a good view from your place.

Thanks everyone. I am feeling smug, smug, smug now.

Now I must do dinner before the lamb burns!

How cool 8) My Dad was an engineer in the RAF for 31 years and spent a fair few of those years working on Vulcans. He can still remember them all (they all have different numbers apparently!). He never flew in one though, something to do with it not being very easy for the crew to get out in case of emergency mid-flight....

Nice videos Bronze. The second one has the better view like I had - particularly with the Lancaster (another gorgeous old thing). We are up high so the view was virtually horizontal with just enough angle to see long wings, but not enough to see the spread. Usually when I hear the engines roaring I am running from one end of the living room to the other to see which side the planes are on - then I run outside the back and then have to dash out to the front. Have a tantrum when I miss them and wave (idiot) when I see them. Last year we had Spitfire over, now that humming does get me going. I ran to the phone to tell dad - and he was happy when he was buzzed by the red arrows too - I'd seen them earlier then called "Quick or they'll all be gone!!!"

Looney my OH's uncle worked on the Concorde - he was very sorry it was grounded. My dad was an engineer on Barracuda's in the Fleet Air Arm. One of the Chief Petty Officers that flew them used to make the engineers go up with him so that they could hear if anything was wrong - also they had better make sure they fixed what was wrong because they would crash with him! He let my dad take the controls because he got to know him quite well - Dad originally wanted to fly in the RAF, but his sight wasn't good enough, so he did the next best thing to getting near planes - joined the Navy  His CPO made his dream come true. What a nice man.

:mrgreen: Not Fair :mrgreen::wink:

The Vulcan was recently "grounded" at RAF Lyneham with one of the little Spitfires - something to do with "paperwork" being invalid - though apparently its cost of flying is astronomical and its touch and go whether it gets enough funding.

Hence it did not fly at the Leistershire (?) air show a few weeks ago.

We were sad when the RAF Falcons jumped out of a civil light aircraft at the Rugby 7's - hoped for a C130 hercules at least, as my Dad used to fly them :(

OH works as aircraft Engineer - and I sent him over to Doncaster for his 30th. He flew in a Jet Provost ( v.fast and v.noisy  ) with a Viper engine. My Dad flew these also - and I have 2 photo's together - one of Dad getting into his provost, and one of OH doing the same 8)

http://www.jetprovostclub.com/ - edited to add web-link - well worth the money for flying/adrenaline junkies, Eddie Todd is a legend.

:lol::lol:8) Yay - now its fair - Southport Airshow has been on and a great big low flying VULCAN skimmed the houses on the way home  .

Could hear it coming - and WOW what a big plane 8) . Chooks were not sooooo impressed and took a while to stop squaking

We nearly went to Southport for the air show today, but ended up taking the dogs for a run on Talacre beach instead :D Sounds like it would have been good :D
