Flooring in walk-in runs

Well have you done it yet. I think I am going to go for it when I get back from holiday. At the moment half my extension is overlapped as there is no room.

 

 

If I extend it fully and then make a side door (I can get more girls. he he.) they'll have more room. Think I may make a swing door of 1 section but I won't have a little door , or see if I can get hold of a spare end panel and put my conversion on the side in place of a panel. mmmm I'll let you make the cut first.

After many evenings of walking up to the run with my wire cutters and then chickening out I got brave (OH said stupid ) and this morning I started cutting!!!

 

And i am VERY happy with the results

 

 

 

I used the back under cube run panel that I had spare from my original cube and the door is quite large. I am able to step in (crouched down of course) but i no longer need to do a Sun Salutation Yoga pose to get to the bantams!

 

The hole I made in the side of the run in not in the middle of the panel as I figured the side closest to the cube has extra support so it is only two holes on the right and the "door" overlaps this too.

 

Door is currently held closed using a mini bungee but will be using caribiner clips when I find them in the car (thanks Redwing )

 

The new door will also allow me to move the extension that OH put in the wrong place up to the cube run so that Rum and Raisin can get up close and personal with little brothers bantams but still have a door panel in between them.

 

This will leave the for Brie and Onion!

Edges have been filed and although I said I was going to Hammerite it I went to B&Q and they want nearly £8 for a small tin of Forest green SO i went to the toy shop and brought some model paint - £1.05 BARGAIN I did buy a pot from B&Q but must have mis-read the pot as it would not dry once applied.

 

I have been in and out of the cube run LOADS this afternoon Much easier to top up feeders and drinkers etc.

 

I would pat myself on the back but my hand is still sore from cutting the wire

Yes Sha. OH was very impressed. He has even been into the cube run using the new door to help with Lemon's scaley leg and he doesn`t do chickens! He also put the big girls away for me too as I was have a nap on the sofa

Were you a little tired after your busy weekend ...having said I'd be able to sleep in the car yesterday as DH would be driving, I actually stayed awake for all bar about 20mins of the 3hr+ journey

 

Closest DH has come to helping with our scaly legged banshee is to hold the jar of surgical spirit and tin of vaseline whilst I juggle the bundle of feathers

Em do you think that the same result could be made by just cutting the run side panel (to make the door) & then finding a method to close it, perhpas usiing spare run clips, instead of using a spare back panel?

I reckon you could but there would be raw edges from where you cut it.

I've been thinking about this... But have an Eglu, not a Cube.

 

I would like to extend the run, but then I wouldn't have room to open the door at the end of the run and be able to slide the poop tray out the other end. So creating a side door could be the answer.

 

Has anyone attempted this with the Eglu run? Concerned as it is curved, whereas I dont think the Cube run is...

 

I've looked at the side door of the run for the Go, but as that run appears to be a different shape, I am not sure it will help me at all

I have made a side opening door on the middle of the three run pieces. I just used the green run clips as the hinges along one side, and then Velcro that I cut from a roll for the opening 'door' so you get a whole 'one run' sized door opening. I have a cover over the top and just unhook it and peel it back.

 

I also have the panel under the back of the cube hinged as a door (my cube and run is on paving slabs and we don't have foxes here in the countryside - they shoot them ) So one side is hinged with the green clips and the opening part has two of the elastic hook clips that come with the shade, hooked tight at an angle. The 'skirt' is on the bottom but only attached at each end with velcro as it isn't really necessary here. It's great to open the door and I have a hanging gravity drinker on the side - and also a gravity free standing feeder too - in addition to the ones in the run.

 

Don't know if this info will give you any ideas of your own.
