In need of an angel.....

Recommended Posts

....to put on top of my Christmas tree! Can anyone help please??

I'm VERY excited as next weekend I will be putting up my first ever Christmas tree :dance: but I can't find a lovely angel to put on the top

I don't know why I want an angel but i just do (stamp the feet, tantrum time), maybe because we always had one when I was young.......

....all the ones I have found are either too cartoonish or are the stuff that nightmares are made of and look as far from angelic as is possible

Any ideas folks?

Thanks :D

Mmm, maybe a trawl of the local garden centres is in order this weekend then (I LOVE garden centres!).....my boyfriend will be thrilled at the prospect!:lol:

I did look in one garden centre but they didn't have any nice ones like you've described......I still managed to spend a small fortune on other decorations though  ......and only just managed to talk myself out of taking home every rabbit and bird in the pets section!!

I had to make do with a star, because I could only find angels as described above, but the star was too heavy and wibbled and wobbled and fell off so has to be 'reinforced' with extra tree branches twisted up and around, a feat of engineering Mr Brunel would have been proud of :D

A truly angelic angel is hard to find...........

I agree. I wanted a new angel a few years ago and searched high and low for one. Stars and fairies are readily available, but I didn't want a star, and what the heck has a fairy got to do with Christmas :? Angels are Christmassy, part of the Christmas story and therefore great for the top of a Christmas tree (in my humble opinion of course), but it seems that Christmas tree decoration manufacturers don't agree with me.

That said I did eventually find a very nice angel, in our local garden centre, and she's (or maybe he, I'm not sure  ) stood on the top of my Christmas tree for the past few years :D

Good luck with the angel hunting. I hope that you manage to track one down :D .

The search continues....!

My Mum has offered me the angel that has been used on our family Christmas tree for ages - I bought it with pocket money in Woolworths about 17 or so years ago - but I can't take it, sort of feel it belongs with them, plus as I'll be spending a few days over Christmas at their house I'll still be able to enjoy looking at it!

When did I become soooo sentimental?!!

We have a fantastic angel - difficult to describe - bought from Traidcraft many years ago - simply done and not cutesy.. I'll get it down later on and post a photo..

as to what an angel should look like.....

if we put "Biblical" angels on the tree - they would scare the children - they would usually be carrying a big sword...

the one that visited the shepherds (Gabriel) scared their pants off - they were sore afraid - and the two that guarded the gates of the Garden of Eden would make anyone quake in their boots..

oh - and it'd be a bloke, not a golden-haired girlie! 8)

We thought that when Jules came home and said she was Angel Gabriel in the school play :?

She is a golden haired girlie

people always pick girls as Angels - yet the Biblical angels were all blokes.. (actually probably asexual - but they had blokes names...!)

St Michael (before he got a job at Marks and Spencer) often looks quite scary!

here he is on Coventry Cathedral pinning the Devil down...

how about him on your Christmas tree??

Yes, he was played by Milo O'Shea (and was called Doctor Durand), but they took the name for the band after visiting the club [i think], Duran Duran being a tip of the hat to the nightclub's name; Barbarellas...

Edited to say that Wikipedia is pretty wishy-washy on the origin of the band's name and if you look at the entry for the single Electric Barbarella it states that the band got their name from the film; however I maintain that they got their name from the club (but I could easily be wrong - I usually am)!:lol:

Sorry Dan, I never know actors names, didn't realise he played Duran Duran!

Anyway, the newly formed Duran (allegedly :? named by John Taylor after he went to see Barbarella) met in their present form at the Rum Runner, where they practised and recruited Simon Le Bon. Allegedly, the owner of the Rum Runner became their first manager. Like you say, all a bit sketchy now though :?

And you are correct, there was a Barbarellas nightclub in Brum, not sure where though but it would be interesting to find out if it was connected in any way. I might just search for Stephen Duffy on Google, see if he sheds light on the truth!

UNCANNY! Was just talking to Emma's (Herd123) OH; Mo last night at Buffie's room party. Mo is a Brummie and he remembered the Rum Runner which was a New Romantic pub by Quayside Tower (off Broad Street) and he reckoned that the Rum Runner was the same location as Barbarellas (although he couldn't be certain), so maybe they renamed Barbrallas to be the Rum Runner...

That is interesting! I did find an old newspaper cutting scanned on the internet which showed the address of Barbarellas as Cumberland Street, off Broad Street and strangely enough opposite the same named building where I used to work :roll: I understand from the internet that Barbarellas was more punky than the Rum Runner, and I think they existed at the same time so were not the same club. As the Durannies were arty types I am guessing they would not frequent Barbarellas, who knows :? With the Duran connection I would have guessed like you Dan, that they could have renamed it, but apparantly not. The location given by Emmas OH suggests that they were very close though. Oh for a time machine!

Just taking my anorak off now!!!!!

Asked my mate (who is a mad Duran fan) for a definitive answer and here is his reply...

Hmmmm, complicated one, this one. However, the facts are:

In 1978, John Taylor and Nick Rhodes were sitting in The Hole in the Wall pub, having seen Barbarella on TV the previous night, and decided DD would be a good name. So, to all intents and purposes, the name comes solely from the film. HOWEVER, one of their first gigs as DD (a few weeks after deciding on the name) was at Birmingham's Barbarellas night club, and considering Rhodes and Taylor were frequenters of the local night club scene at that point it's highly unlikely that Barbarellas DIDN'T influence them at some point. The question has to be pondered: would they have watched Barbarella on TV (bear in mind that, at the time, Barbarella was very much an underground, cult, non-mainstream film, and was shown very late the night they watched it) had they not already been aware of, and probably visited, Barbarellas night club...?

Sorry the answer isn't more straightforward. If you want to take the actual facts, there's no link to the night club; if you want to take the speculative approach, I've always thought the two must be linked...

Unless we pin down Nick Rhodes or John Taylor it looks like we'll never know!

I'll go with your friends speculative approach then, Dan. The name is intriguing, and I for one would have had to find out where it came from, after all, I watched the film to find the connection!

I'll happily pin down John Taylor for you
